T-Rocket 5879 & 5881
« on: November 05, 2014, 06:51:43 pm »
Just an idea that I posted on a Wreck forum & thought I'd share here.  Not planning on building it, but I think it could be a cool idea.  I'd probably use a 22k grid resistor going into V2-2.

The 2.2k on the power tube screens is to increase compression.

Interesting mash-up... but perhaps it is a bit confusing to put "Trainwreck Rocket" right on the schematic, as it could potentially lead to some confusion down the line. Perhaps it would be best to call it Tubenit-Rocket  :icon_biggrin:

And a few questions on the design (perhaps they have already been covered on other threads...) anyway, the 5879 is used as the input tube, it is very linear and the gain is similar to the 12AX7, so could you really hear the "pentode" sound? As the rest of the circuit (except stage 1) is the same as the Rocket, when the output tubes are replaced with the 5881's, don't you need to change the gain structure to account for the difference in the grid drive requirement?

Yeah, I guess it is confusing to have Trainwreck Rocket on the schematic.  Should've had T-Rocket.  I edited a schematic that was for a Trainwreck Rocket clone.

Yes, you definitely can hear the 5879 in V1.  Not that different then the HoSo56 of DaGeezer's.  Change the 5879 to a paralleled 12A_7 and you have a different tone.

I really don't know anything about the Rocket and have no desire to build one, so I'm not sure about the 5881 idea.  I do think it would sound good though.

Agree that there's not much t-wreck connection maybe T-Rex? Anyway, I think it would sound fine but not sure about the extra send/return stuff as I've not ventured with that. But the initial design is pretty solid. I like a CF stage after the 5879 as I have one in my CherryBomb amp and it sounds terrific. The caps before and after the pi seem rather large to me and Bass heavy. But that's an easy change/fix. I haven't had luck using the high freq roll-off cap on the 5879 load resistor for some reason as it introduces noise and had a weird reaction with mine so it had to be removed and things returned to "normal". I can say with certainty that the amp would sound terrific with plenty of gain to be had too.

Here is a layout IF someone wants to try building this amp.  Check for errors. Compare with schematic. IF there is a discrepancy, go with the schematic.

Nice of you do to that for others tubenit. Maybe SG could put it on his "playground" fast & easy enough to try? (although I have no doubts how it will perform)  :icon_biggrin:

Another DRAFT idea for a Rocket Reverb   Check for errors!  Compare schematic and layout, if a discrepancy, go with schematic.
