Frumpy, the best of Krautrock
« on: November 11, 2014, 03:24:35 am »
Way back in the early 70's Frumpy opened for Humble Pie.  Frumpy was a German band that had a hot girl singer with an incredible voice.  They were a keyboard oriented band with a fantastic Hammond player - I wish I could get my L to sound like his L... :worthy1:   I was blown away by the band and especially the singer, Inga Rumpf.  Unfortunately I could not find any of their albums and eventually I forgot about them.  I got thinking about them a while back and started doing some searches and finally found them.

The first, By The Way, kind of poppy, really showcases Inga's voice - especially at 4:30 on.
Frumpy (Inga Rumpf) - By The Way (live)

This one, has the most awesome Hammond growl I have ever heard!  Great vocals, nice jam.
Frumpy - Good Winds

This is a fantastic live piece that really showcases the band.  I think they were easily on par, if not better, than a lot of the jam bands of the day.
"Duty" by Frumpy (Germany, 1973)

I know all you classic rock fans will like these guys as much as I do.

Yeah! I like it!  :icon_biggrin:

That girl can sang, Hammond players Great, both tone and his chops, guitar players pretty good from what they let him play, Hammond player gets the bulk of the solos, some nice slide too, bass player and drummer are tight, great little band.

Good Winds, nice little swing'n samba, I like it a lot. (I hear a little Pink Floyd type stuff at times in their songs, mostly from the Hammond parts.)

Look at this, they can still bring it. Her voice is a little lower but still very good, nice deep wide vibrato and great phrasing/timing. I think it's the same Hammond player? There's 3 songs in this 1 clip, Inga's playing slide on a National steel on 1 song and she's pretty good.

Yeah, there is a lot of stuff out there with Inga.  I didn't want to put too much up!  Yes, she can still sing!  Her voice is more "mature" now, but really great!  That band she is with in 2008 is REALLY tight, lots of jazz/blues influence.  Yes, same keyboard player.  Unfortunately he just passed a few years ago.  He was a huge name in Europe with many album appearances as well as solo work.

I still like the old raw stuff with the accidental feedback and leslie speed switch clicks and everything else that came with playing live in the 70's! :icon_biggrin:

Glad you liked it!

Yeah, I like that kinda stuff a lot.

Sorry to hear that.

Hey Jim maybe you know about this early 70's German or Dutch (?) rock band? I can't remember their name.   :BangHead:

I bought an album by them in high school (74/5?) that at the time I liked. (I still have the album boxed up in the basement, have to search through 700/800+ albums to find it.    :BangHead:)

The album cover was a shot of the band with their gear set up like they were playing, I seem to remember the lead guitarist had a Marshall 1/2 stack with a Gibby 335 (?) and he had the guitar neck/headstock pointing up as he was bending a string, on the left side of the cover? I think they were a 5 piece band with 2 guitars and a male lead singer?

Any help here you (or anyone else) can give?

                  Thanks,   Brad     :dontknow:

No, that's not them.

I saw Focus at the Aragon in the early 70's as the middle act.

The guitarist had an SG through a Marshall stack that was over the top miss behaving, to say the least, that he had a hissy fit and thru his SG down on the stage and walked, no stormed off stage!!!!!!

Their keyboard player and drummer stayed on stage and did their hit "Hocus Pocus" but that was it, NEXT.

That would be Jan Akkerman.  He is an incredible virtuoso.  Look up some of his newer stuff.  He is good and he knows it....

For those of you wondering if the singer from Frumpy, Inga Rimpf, can hang with the boys on a pop-metal tune, check this out.  The refrain is kick butt!

I will refrain from watching that again. Can I have the 5 minutes of my life back please? And what 5-year old was behind the camera? Inga's either wearing part of Ace Freeley's wannabe homemade outfit or is that a Dutch milkmaid Halloween costume? :l2: Thanks to the 5-year old behind the camera I couldn't even tell if she was hot or not therefore simply no value what so ever. The band scores a 1 also only because the bass player actually got excited for a couple seconds and the lead player? 1st lead should've been done by the 5-year old camera kid and the 2nd one was much better and scored all the up into the just plain bad level. The only redeeming aspect of the entire thing is her voice I give you that. Inga RumpRoast was much better the older you get my brudda Jeembob. :w2:

Oh man, the hook was great!  Come on, other than the crappy wang bar stuff from her guitarist(?), she rocked!  You are on my list....

Willabe,

Trying to think about some old bands from the early 70's....  Dual guitars but English, Wishbone Ash?

Definitely German:
Triumvirat - Illusions on a double dimple is required listening for any prog fan!
Lucifer's Friend
Epsilon
Epitaph
Odin
Abacus

If these are not it, your gonna have to do some digging!

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!!!!!!         Thanks Jim!

                 Epitaph

Youtube is acting up so I can't get a link, I'll try latter. I had (have) the Outside the Law album.

                         Brad    :icon_biggrin:

I just listened to a couple of songs off the album and remembered them right away, haven't heard them since ~76?

Funny but to me listing to them now the songs and especially the leads sound a lot like the 70's southern rock group the Outlaws. I can see why I liked them back then.

Here ya go, a couple off of the 'Outside the Law' album. (Seems they went off the deep end on later albums with the metal imagery stuff, not to my liking thank you.)

Brad,

Yeah I remember these guys, a local album rock station used to play them all the time back in the day.  They always got compared to the Alman Bros with the dual leads and the semi country rock.  I didnt see it....  However, I do think The Outlaws listened to these guys and said, "Hey lets add two MORE guitarists all playing different CRAP at the same time - because more CRAP, is better CRAP!!!!  AND we should play our songs(?) through VERY CRAPPY sounding solid state amps because more solid state CRAP is even BETTER CRAP!!!!!"  Sorry, I am finished with my Outlaws rant.   Although I liked Epitaph, they certainly never met a song that they didn't think required a lead or two or all the way through!

Glad I could bring back some memories!  That local album rock station has a classics show on Sunday morning.  All that stuff from the 60's and 70's.  I am constantly writing down old tunes I'd forgotten.

Yeah, just my luck, one of our members will reply saying, "Hey %!%!$$#, I'm Oswald Magilicutty and I play guitar for the Outlaws!"  I meant that rant/review with the best "just kidding" intentions! :icon_biggrin:

Since things are a little slow at this end of the forum, I thought I would post one more Inga clip.  This is Superstitious with an awesome metal guitar driven version.  Inga's vocals are perfect for this tune.  This woman can kill it!!!  Sorry Jojo! :l2:
