Weber power transformer hookup options
« on: March 26, 2015, 11:42:52 am »
How can I connect the transformer to the existing VJ on/off switch, AC in and which wires should I ground? I am a novice but have been studying these amps and how they work.  I put this together.

Start by identifying the transformer. There should be a number on the top of the transformer if it is a Weber. Then go to Weber's website and look up the drawing for that transformer.

Then get a schematic for the VJ. They're all over the net. If you still need help post a link to the PT drawing and the VJ schematic or just attach them to a message and we'll be able to give you more exact details.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

The pilot light is in the on/off switch so I grounded the 7 pin on the 6v6 and ran a wire from it to the 4 pin on the 12ax7. Will that work?  The red high voltage wires go to the rectifier tube pins 4 and 6 (Plate 660v) and ground it's red yellow center tap. Then connect the green wires directly to the 5y3gt  also, using pins 2 and 8 (filament 6.3 vct) and ground it's center tap green yellow? Tape off red and white and the two yellow. That's what I came up with. The brown black and the blue wires on the primary side is confusing me a bit too, for example what to ground and where to put my 2 amp fuse.

STOP! Tell us what you are doing. It appears you are building an amp (maybe a Fender Champ) in a VJ chassis.

Not likely. If the pilot light is built into the on/off switch it probably works on 120VAC, not filament voltage.

Yes

NOOOO! The two yellow wires connect to pin 2 and 8 of the 5Y3.

The green wires will connect to pins 2 and 7 of the 6V6 and the green/yellow wire will connect to ground.

Tape off the brown wire. Connect the black wire to the white wire of your AC power cord. Connect the blue wire to the proper terminal on your on/off switch. Connect a wire from the other proper terminal of the on/off switch to the side terminal of the fuse holder. Connect the black wire of the AC power cord to the end terminal of the fuse holder. Connect the green wire of the AC power cord to the chassis.

Yes I am building a basic Champ amp 5 watt single ended. Yes now I see the pilot light does run off the 120vac in the VJ's original set up. The only thing stock from the VJ electrically is the ac in and the on/off switch. Thanks for the help and I will make those corrections on the 5y3 and the 6v6. Also in the AC in there is a tiny fuse.

Since your power switch has 4 terminals it's reasonable to ASSume that it is a DPST switch. If so, just connect the PT black wire to one lower terminal and the blue wire to the other lower terminal. Connect the line black and white to the other two terminals.

BUT.... verify the switch operation with your ohm meter before making these connections.

Will do. I was going to get rid of the DPST and go conventional but I would have had a big hole in my chassis. Doing it this way then I will know how to use these "newer" type switches in the future if need be.
