Chassis source?
« on: May 06, 2015, 11:02:57 am »
Hi guys,

I typically buy my D'style and Fender style chassis from other sources, but I'm looking to build a Hoffman AC30 head.  I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a one-off chassis that would work for an AC30 layout?  I can always do a blank chassis from CE Dist, but if someone has a source where I can get something the right size with at least the tube sockets and PT punched out, that would be awfully nice.

Thanks

Humbly,
Mark.

I did, thanks.  It's just these are the standard Marshall/Fender/Tweed type unless I'm missing something (which is entirely possible, so bear with me!).  I haven't built an AC 30 before, but I'm looking to do 4 EL84's -- I didn't see anything with 4 EL84  and 3 preamp style tube socket holes on the Hoffman page.  So I'd be looking at one of your blank chassis, which is fine....just wondering if someone sells something pre-punched that would accommodate the layout 4 EL84, 3 9-pin sockets and a PT punchout.  Like maybe a generic tube punchout that would work.  Sorry if my original post was a little sketchy.  I'm beginning to wonder if this qualifies as a "stupid question".

AC30 chassis seem to be a drill your own deal

I have that nice blank Alu chassis

If Mojo stocked one, I would have it in my store, but they don't

I saw the 17 x 6.5 x 2.5 blank one.  Sounds like from what you said, this may be my only option, then.

I don't know all the chassis sources out there
Maybe someone has something like a vintage chassis

But personally, I would prefer to have a chassis with all the tube holes in a row, not scattered all over the place like some vintage chassis

So I would drill my own

Or forget about a 4 power tube AC30 because 2 power tubes are way loud enough for me
In that case, there's the 18 watt stout

Yah, that 18W stout chassis would be real nice, but the guy I'm building it for wants it like that.  I agree 4 EL84's is a lot of "loud"!

Will you be using Hoffman's board layout? It's optimized for tubes to be lined up across the back of the chassis and controls on the front side of the chassis. I don't recall seeing a pre-punched chassis that will accommodate this. Except for Ceriatone. Their transformers look weird so the punched chassis may not work well with other transformers.

I would use a blank 20x6.5x2.5 chassis and standup style iron, similar layout to my AC-15. That build has 8 noval sockets in a straight line. You could probably squeeze the tube line-up of Hoffman's AC-30 to fit into a 17" long chassis.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

If not all in one line you can double up on just the power tubes

sluckey, thanks for the link and info.  Actually, looking at your web page was real helpful.

I do plan to use the Hoffman board layout.  I'm not going to have the vibrato, so that's one less tube compared to yours.

Doug - good point on doubling up the power tubes.
