Trying out a MOJO HAND Blue Bonnet Special OD
« on: July 23, 2015, 09:57:36 pm »
A friend of mine has this for sale for $90 bucks. He let me take it home for a try out. I just checked on line and see these go for $180 new. Checked out the advertisement hype on line and it said "Think Billy Gibbons". After trying it out for the first time I have to say, I agree. Being an old BG fan from the 70's that cut my teeth on "Tres Hombres" I have to say, yes this pedal definitely leans in that direction. With the gain set on about 2:00 those pinch harmonics like on "La Grange" just easily flows out. If my continued experiance with this pedal is as good as this first try out, I will surely be picking up this pedal. Platefire

I think Billy has, in the past mind you, said he uses a Range Master. I've never seen a 'Rig Rundown' done on him but if he gets his tone with the Range Master and lots of tube amp horsepower, then you could save some money and build a simple RM from a pcb or there are multiple sites with schemos for the DIY.

Billy's rig rundown

Billy's tone changes with just  about every album

The old tone sounds like a Bassman or a tweed amp to me

I watched the "Rig Rundown Video" Thanks! Interesting---I though I was odd for liking .009's but he uses .007-.038 and has never broke a string in live performance with that guitar tech! I can't imagine that. I've broke and .009 and .016 just in the last week. Also uses no treble on is amp rigs? I really haven't kept track of Billy through all his modern transitions. All my experience with him goes back to the 70's. Seen him in Shreveport Hertz Memorial Auditorium in the late 70's when he still wore a cowboy hat, jeans and cowboy shirt with the tail out. He was still playing the original pearly gates and a flying V. Another thing, they were the loudest band I ever heard--"Hands Down"---but very good performance. Platefire

I gave the Blue Bonnet back to my friend and he handed me a EH Soul Food to try out or buy if I want. Being a Tube Screamer user very much the Soul Food is a lot more transparent than my TS-9 and and TS-5 I've been comparing side by side with the soul food. The soul food makes a lot better clean boost as it has less apparent distortion set at "O" drive than the TS's. The soul food at high Drive/gain setting is more defined than the TS regarding clarity. As I understand the box is suppose to be a Klon Clone. I guess it's a lot like the TS without the mid hump. I will put it on my pedalboard at Church to play with the Praise band as a clean boost---see how it works out. Platefire

great video 34. Billy is one of only a very few guitar 'heroes' of mine. I'll say one thing for BG, he's not afraid to spread the wealth around which is an extra bonus. That tech is one heck of a tweaker.  Gotta love it.  Re: the super lite strings. I saw an interview with BG and he was recalling his first time working with BB King. They played some tune together and BB says to Billy, "nice sound but you're working too hard to get it" (paraphrased)  I didn't understand and then Billy said that BB told him to use lighter gauge strings. I guess he took that tip from BB seriously.
