I want to build a rifle rest for optics alignment

I think recoil springs aren't indispensable for a 22LR caliber (or they are ?)

Will this be for competitive shooting or product review - that you will need this kind of solid support to dial in a sight?  A sand bag or bi-pod should get you plenty close?  A .22 is good to about 100yrds.  Unless you just like building things, I would not think this is necessary.  Maybe some of our other marksmen will give their views.

About the rest, is to be used to set optics, not during shooting (and, YES, I like to build metal stuff  )

Such a rest can also be used with an AR-15 style rifle, which has a long protruding magazine.  That can be an issue with rests that have a center rail, which is in the way of a magazine.  Though a center rail is fine with a traditional style rifle.


The rest in your photo is unsuitable in my opinion.  The fore-end of the rifle should rest only on a soft surface -- like a shooting bag or foam; never on a hard surface.  And, the fore-end should never be clamped in place.  These things will alter the way the rifle shoots and change the point of impact.  (Also, never rest the barrel on anything, only the fore-end of the stock.)

Springs are unnecessary and may also change the point of impact.  A sight-in rest should place the butt-end of the stock as close to your shoulder as possible.  To relieve the effects of repeated recoil, wear a coat, or shooting vest with a gel pack in the shoulder area.  Also, in the rest I showed, bags of lead shot placed in the tray do a great job of damping felt recoil.

Yes, confirmed.  A sight-in rest should support the rifle both front and rear.  This is to take shooter error "out of the equation" for sight-in purposes, and to show how well the rifle itself can group a set of shots.
