Speaker Cone Hole Repair
« on: September 28, 2015, 09:26:34 pm »
This is the Fender Special Design Speaker in a 74 Twin. Guess the area of is about a jagged 3/8" Diameter. Can this be repaired where the old vintage speaker will work normally? Platefire

It will probably work normally as-is, in an open-back cab.  In a sealed closed-back cab, the hole is an air opening so it should be repaired.  The repair of small holes & tears is easy.  Elmers glue, bits paper towel or coffee filter; and a black magic marker for color matching.

A number of this old amps that I have revived have holes or tears in the speakers.  I use blue paper towel (the kind for shop work) and Titebond.  I work it into the slip of paper towel with my fingers, then smooth it over the hole.  I work bubbles out with something small and round.  If I can get to the backside of the tear, I do the same for that side.  And, as stated above, black magic marker on the front side, just in case they could be seen.  The pale blues does show up.

Three of these fixes have been a friends studio for the last few years.  He doesn't know (their still my amps), but it doesn't matter if they sound good.

Thanks! The customer doesn't even know the hole exist. When I get an old Fender amp to bring it back from the abiss, I look at every flaw for correction. I have a hard time stopping with just what I'm told to do. Platefire
