10" and 12" speaker together
« on: October 13, 2015, 01:18:42 pm »
Anybody here build an amp/cabinet using a 10 and 12 inch speaker together
Seems like it could be the best of both worlds
The top and bottom of a 10 and the warmth of a 12

I've done it before, It works well and cover a wide range of frequencies, But you must match the SPL rating of the 2 speakers, if one has a higher SPL than the other , it will suck all the power and you won't hear the other .... I learnt that the hard way

I built a 4X with 2X 10"s & 2X 12's.  Love it.

oooh they sound nice together
I cut an old 2 x 10" baffle in half and affixed it to one side of the 2x12 baffle to try it out
Weighs in at 50lbs though, still lighter than the 85lbs Super! but substantially heavier than my 34lbs deluxes
It might lose a  pound or 2 when I cut the cabinet down to be a couple inches less wide

I actually stuck two vintage Jensen 100W (8 ohm) 12" drivers and a couple of equally old Celestian 10" drivers in a cabinet I built with an adjustable rear baffle to adjust the "F" value. It's a superbly diverse cab. About a year after I built it I installed a rotary switch that allows you to switch between all of the modes: 1 X 10"; 1 X 12"; 1, 10" & 1, 12"; 2 X 10"; 2 X 12"; and all four. It took some playing around to get the impedance to be consistent but it really does anything you want. . . ..  :icon_biggrin:
