Tweed Overdrive Special
« on: November 03, 2015, 04:00:15 am »
Hey guys,

I recently built up a Tweed Overdrive Special and with great results. Did it a little differently and used 6V6s since I already had the mags and tubes for doing it this way.

This is a crunch monster for sure. Really like the control and the switching from clean to overdrive. Tone is great on this baby and getting better as I adjust to my taste etc.

I have it sitting on a 4X10 cab with 4 Celestion G10 40s, nothing real special but man it sure cranks, even with 2 year old 6V6 tubes which are my test tubes. Will get a matched pair of JJ 6V6S tubes which I always use on mt Tweed Deluxe builds and will give some additional clean headroom.

Thanks Tubenit

Thank you for sharing your success!  Glad you like the amp.

IF you have any pictures of the amp in the cabinet and/or the inside of the chassis ........... I'd love to see them?

And soundclips ......... IF you have a way to do them.

With respect, Tubenit

Congrats!

I will be attempting my TOS build shortly. The turret board from Hoffmann arrived last week. I just need to get the chassis work finished.

I plan to build mine with 4 6V6s.

Cheers Stephan

Hey,

4 6V6s would be very substantial. Its a good idea depending on how loud you wanta be, haha. This thing cranks as is with 2 6V6s. I actually added a 22 ohm resistor to the cathode bias point, total 412 ohm to get a cleaner clean tone. I am running 394v buss on this amp. They were running a little too fat before. Preamp gets things fat enough as is and especially with the fat pot. Can run the clean channel with a Strat and simply turn up the fat control and it really gets close to an SRV tone using a Chorus and no overdrive pedal.

I also use a TS808 and it really likes the tone. I added a low input jack and it helps using it at home and nice fat tone.

I like the JJs but sold the amps that had them and need to get another pair of 6V6S JJs asap before doing anymore tweaks to this amp. I just wired up the effects loop today and it works very well. Use a Boss chorus there and tone was very good and no overtones from the effects etc. Will try a delay/reverb pedal tomorrow thru effects loop.

I would guess you would get a lot more clean headroom out of the quad 6V6 arrangement.

Cheers

I dont have it in the cab yet. Have not decided whether a combo or head yet.

I will try and get you some pics. I will probably take the chassis to the pub and use it at a gig. The people there come up and take pics when I do this and thinks its cool to build your amps. They sound better at the clubs also, haha.
