suggestions for new amp, from an old jcm 600?
« on: January 06, 2016, 11:37:32 am »
Hey.
My brother just dumped an old marshall jcm 600 on me.
I really don't like how it sounds, and would like to try to change it into something else, and preferably reuse the current tubes. (cutting down costs).

I already have a 2xel84 version of a DC30 that I really like, and use as my main amp.
I've built a fender princeton, and wouldn't mind another fender like amp, but they generally seem to use 6l6's.
I also have a ax84 october club already.
If I wasn't locked on the el34's I'd probably be trying something like a rocket, or hoso56/soho, or xits thingie, or fender deluxe?
So my preference is somewhere between something clean or somewhat crunchy - not really high gain. Though maybe a bit different sounding than the DC30 I already have.
No specific style - preferably an alround amp that likes pedals too.

So... any suggestions?

Hey mate, Nothing wrong with the JCM/600-JTM/60
From what I can remember they had some overheating problems.
A mod to the overdrive section has made it sound much better.

Maybe the current tubes are sick/shot and that's why you do not like it?

True, it aint a Fender.

*Below MAXimum* output, there's not a heap of difference EL34 6L6. I've used both in an amp that was not often used flat-out-loud. Yes, when you beat the big bottles against the rails, EL34 and 6L6 do it different. In that case, you may be buying new big bottles.

But just one sick 12AX7 will crap-up the whole sound. At least rotate one known-good small bottle through the sockets to see if it makes a "Whoa!" difference.
