the schematics I have show no standby switch.  I've heard conflicting views on the subject, is it needed?

One of the best explanations of this comes from the valve wizard:

http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/standby.html

I'm currently reading his book on preamp design too.  The guy seems pretty sharp.

Basically the whole idea for standby switches came from another type of tube use, and doesn't apply to guitar amps.  Sadly, someone early on (maybe Leo Fender?) and everyone else just did the same.  They're not needed.  I only use mine on my Vox as a means of temporary mute to switch cables etc.  Otherwise, I never use it.  (I've heard even using it that way can be somewhat detrimental on tubes.)

edit: modify wording a bit.,

Standby is so you can take a break in total silence (no stray hum/buzz), yet get back playing FAST (without warm-up) when the bartender gives you a dirty look.
