5e3 voltage and output tube type
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Hi there!
I have a homebuilt 5e3 and the B+ voltage is too high.Rather than use a zener diode, could I use a 5 watt resistor before the rectifier tube?Or could I use 6L6 tubes instead for a different tone? Also, is there really that much tone difference using NOS tubes like telefunken?
Thanks guys!

 How high is "too high"?
Newer 6V6s can take a higher voltage than the older ones.

If you have 6L6s around, then try 'em and see what happens.
I doubt it will go up in smoke right away and might sound good.

While NOS tubes won't make you rich, smarter and improve your sex life, they were built to higher standards.
The reason is that once upon a time, they were sometimes used in critical military and medical applications where they had to be rugged and consistant.

I don't think any of us can tell you, for sure, if the difference would be worth it to you. I will venture the opinion that they wouldn't hurt anything other than your wallet.

Thanks for the quick reply.I will try what you suggest. What the heck? I can always replace tubes. The voltage is hovering around 382v.

 "382V"

I have a 5E3 with 6V6's and with a SS rectifier plug, I get 383V on the plates. With a 5U4 I get about 336V.
