The cabinet is pretty bad.  The wood on the bottom has been wet so you can guess that story.  Cab is made outta plywood...  Baffle is shot too. 

Even with a great labor rate the owner is not ready to put up the cash to get her done.  I told him "DO NOT SELL THIS" and wait till you're in a place to get it fixed.
I also highly warned him of firing it up somehow...

A 64 is a great find as I see a lot more 65-66 and have built 5, 63 clones now.  I have a 64 Super Reverb that is all original and has never been outside but 2 times.  Once leaving the music store and another leaving my Fathers house to mine.


I am curious about this one you have.  I am curious to see if Fender changed the transformer to Shumacher from Triad as I have heard some 64's still had paper wrapped black frame Triad's but never confirmed.

Ed, IF I end up doing this one I will document the snot out of it.  I am wondering at this point if the transformers are any good at all...  The only thing I can see was touched was the bias cap and diode, the 2 filter caps.  Other than than that it all there.  The 3 screws were gone too on the eyelet board?  Mystery to me.  All the pots, switches and input are orig.  One pot is frozen.  I'll end up buying this thing if he decides to sell it.  I need another amp as the other garage full is not enough LOL

Can you offer him a $200-$250 special (not including a new speaker) just to get the thing working with cabinet as-is so he falls in love and then begins to aspire to what you can show would be the final result of your typical mscaggs hose-out & rehab?

That is a rabbit hole I don't want to chase.  I'm kinda like, do it right or let it go.  Been there done that and I become married to amplifiers that way...

No I appreciate it and I hear what you're saying for sure.  In this case it is so far gone that anything than a complete teardown is futile.  The eyelet board is fine and untouched, it everything else that is dicey.  The trannies need to be tested as there is probably a 50/50 chance they are blown...

People just don't realize when they stick an amp in in a barn they are sentencing it to a slow agonizing death and after so long it's hard to bring them back. Last barn job I did was a Gibson Lancer and the rats had chewed up the output transformer and reverb transformer plus it had a special combination on/off/standby switch that was bad. Thanks to a Hoffman forum member(P Batty) that happened to have some old Lancer parts, sent me everything I needed free even though I tried to pay him. Platefire

It seems that rodents find the insides of an abandoned amp irresistible.
Of course they chew on all the most expensive parts.
Then leave their droppings everywhere.
Quite nasty and frustrating to try to resurrect them.

A complete rebuild, like Mike is a Pro at, is the only way to go IMO.
It has to be something special, or have sentimental value to justify those costs.
A new off the shelf tube amp from a local retailer, will likely cost less.   

If your client is in the market for a new amp,
maybe you could offer him a discount on one of your quality builds,
and take this as a trade-in?

That  is a shame to happen to a great amp. However- this thread with those pictures is very cool.

I passed on the whole job.  I saved the guy from spending too much money on that thing, honesty is something I'm guilty of.  I told him to sell that thing for parts and if he want's a cool Deluxe I would do a scratch build for him or, he could buy a vintage one for probably what he would spend on the barn find.  Really, a faceplate and chassis was all that could have been used.  Like MResistor said, dang shame...

I think you arrived at the correct conclusion. Somebody will pay $X less than retail for that and it'll cost you $2X to get it there. Kind of sad to have it go by, but you're right, it's going to be a rough slog to get it nice looking and reliable.
