HoSo56-OD demo
« on: March 27, 2016, 05:08:45 pm »
I had some trouble getting this one recorded.  And my left hand is having some problems & I can't really do vibrato much with my hand so my usual mediocre playing is even below par.

There were no pedals other then the tiniest amount of delay in the FX loop of the amp.  I added some delay in the mix and a little EQ.

With respect, Tubenit

It was interesting trying to record this HoSo56-OD amp.  It is so touch sensitive that it is more difficult to record and get an even recording line level.  Without changing any settings on the amp,  you can significantly lower the volume and change the expression by just picking lighter.

So, what was happening is that when I'd pick lighter ......... I could hear it fine in the room but the recording would be too soft to use OR it would jump from way too soft volume to too much volume.  A less touch sensitive amp seems to be easier to record with using the simplistic set up that I have.  The cab was mic'd.

So, in that regard, the recording doesn't do justice to the touch sensitivity and the dynamics of the amp,  IMO.

Plate, thanks for the encouragement on the playing. Both hands now have "trigger finger" on the middle fingers and it makes it almost impossible to do much vibrato at all when playing.  So the tone comes out much more bland/sterile to my ears.  I either need the surgery on my left hand or to see if I can get another cortisone shot which helped it for about 4-6 months.

With respect, Jeff

I personally use to get real depressed when I would hear someone like Greg Koch. That dude blows my mind he's got so much ability going on but I don't let it bother me much anymore. I learned to enjoy the ability the Lord gave me with the idea of improving as much as possible. My brain and fingers work on a much slower pace :l2: (slow-hand would truly fit me also)now people like Greg I just enjoy their ability and try to take something away I might could use myself. I just love playing and think you do to and it shows in all your projects and playing too. Platefire

Plate,

I genuinely appreciate the encouraging and kind words!  I do enjoy playing (& building of course).  And for some inexplicable reason, my lack of talent has not cramped my enthusiasm to try and have fun with it.

Jeff, you are far from lacking talent.  I thing you are a really good player, much more advanced than average.  The amp sounds great as well.

We are our worst critics.  We hear a recording and we never hear the mistakes, but ALL players make them.  I have even seen Eric Clapton and Joe Bonamassa miss notes.  In the studio doing sessions we do many takes, lots with mistakes especially when first starting as you feel the pressure.

Back when I played professionally and was gigging almost every night and playing all the time I was not sloppy at all and could hit all the notes and rarely missed them, but sometimes I just felt the groove stronger.

Nowadays since I play for fun mostly, I can finally play what I like to play and I enjoy it more.  That is what a hobby is all about.  Sure, I can still play fast and still learn licks from the greats like Brent Mason, Jerry Reed, Chet and also I am no stranger to Blackmore and EVH.

I just love guitar and Platefire said it great.  You know Billy Gibbons or David Gilmore do not play fast, but have incredible phrasing.  I will say I have to have some speed to play what I love like Jerry Reeds version of Alabama Jubilee, but there are other approaches to the song like Roy Clark did that are not as difficult technically and sound really great.

I have finally quit comparing myself to other players.  I play like me and you play like you.  I can assure you if we were together on a Saturday afternoon eating BBQ and swapping licks we would have a ball and that is what it is about anyway.

Job well done and thanks for sharing it!

Come on over.  I will get the smoker going.  Bring your guitar as I only have 4 of those, but no amp necessary.  If I don't hve one oyu like, I have the stuff so you can build what you like, even if you want to use UX201a tube. :icon_biggrin:

Agreed, try not to be too critical and just let it flow out. Nice tone and demo Jeff.

I have a critique if I may on equipment demo's in general and this may not be the best place and timing?

It's okay to hear songs or passages but when I want to hear an amp, guitar, or pedal being demo'd - I appreciate minimal words and not too much song playing (to not be overly time consuming) and instead mostly riffs, chord changes, and not too much noodling without frequent changes in all the settings. Equipment demos can take long enough as it is. Also, the last thing I need to hear is somebody trying to be EVH, Gibbons, Beck, Page, etc... it almost always takes away from the point of the demo in the first place. And I will raise my hand at being guilty here too...it's a fine line.  :hello:

It shouldn't be "look at me", it should be check out this beautiful sound or cool sizzling OD and the way it sustains off...etc... then hit a chord or note and let it sustain a while... This may not seem very entertaining to the average listener but it is important to a person considering to build something similar or a with perspective buyer. Trying to accomplish an equipment demo AND a nice sounding composition are not generally enharmonic (to use a musical term).

Jeff, nice song and playing aside but being a demo of your amp I feel like I only got to hear a single setting and therefore only a tiny fraction of what it can do?

With respect, Joe

That is a fair critique and it is only a fraction of the tone that the amp has.  When I can, I'll make a demo of the amp that shows more of what the amp is capable of.  I threw the demo together rather quickly on a day that I had lots of projects and such to get done.

with respect, Jeff

Your amp is something that I've been wanting to hear for a long time in it's various settings especially the OD switched tones and the blooming/sustaining effects it has? With your really nice descriptions as you build & modify - on many occasions I've thought about being a fly on the wall to hear what you're describing. Although I myself have been enjoying really clean tones too in the last couple of years don't leave that out also please. Some of those earlier comments were not meant to be directed directly towards you, rather hoping some others could read it also? Thanks T!

Na, I wouldn't expect that from anyone that hasn't built something in the decade (or two?)  :w2:   :l2:
