Finally built myself a 1x12
« on: June 01, 2016, 12:29:27 am »
I got a Celestion Gold 12" 15 Ohm for my birthday so I built a cabinet to house it.  I'm not so completely pleased with the fabric, some of the glue seems to have seeped through, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with the final product:

Finger joined box, and covered the front with a kind of plastic screen material, and the cloth cover has a mettalic silver kind of over cover on it.

Hi Phil

Looks good! Yours looks a lot nicer than mine that I built about 10 years ago.
Well how does it sound? I see yours is closed back, mine is also except I added
Some hardware fasteners to quickly make it an open back.

I had a 10" speaker extra where I changed the speaker out in my DIY Champ, so I decided to make a 1-10 closed back/open back but I like it better closed back. Also didn't install covering and went with natural finish. Presently got a Emi Rajin Cajun in it that I'm very happy with. I've used the daylights out of mine. Ever since, I've wanted to build a 1-12.

It appears you hooked your speaker direct to the speaker cord, is that right or am I seeing it wrong? Platefire
On the right track now<><

Actually its not 100% closed back, my brother used to install car stereos and knew about the 'Q' requirement for closed cabs, I didn't want to build it clsoed if I coudln't find that information, or you reduce the quality and output of the speaker, so there's a pretty small slit in the middle.  I don't think the pics show that very well.  Also I didn't put the wire directly in, I have a Switchcraft 11 jack on the back that the cable is plugging into.

It sounds incredible.  The supposed reason the gold exists is for two reasons:  1. to give a higher watt version of the blue, (50 vs 15watts) 2. to have the broken in sound from the start.  I think it accomplishes both very well.

I've played three amps through it now,  My AC30 clone, my Gibson EH-185 clone and my recently recapped/modded Fender Blues Deluxe each sounds amazing, and way better than the stock speaker for the BD that I've been using for the other two.

Love it, but man it's expensive.  260 bucks for one speaker.  One reason I researched them was that I saw that mscaggs put them in one of his builds, and thought I should check them out.
