JSchem problems on mac
« on: June 05, 2016, 09:07:32 am »
I have the "power PC not supported" error. I upgraded to El Capitan however it wasnt working before I upgraded my OS. I think I had 10.06.8 before. It was pretty out dated. I installed all Java updates. Still nothing. Anyone have a fix or alternate schematic program for mac?

I found a fix for anyone with this problem. It is not only affected by java. I (for whatever reason) had Zipeg as my software for unzipping files. I got this mac from a friend a while back. I deleted it and re downloaded jschem. After that I used the default mac unzipping program. This installed jschem but now I am getting this error "jschem is damaged and suggest moving to trash"

From there you just have to follow these steps. Works fine now. http://www.statsilk.com/support/faq/resolving-mac-only-error-file-damaged-and-should-be-moved-trash

I had that problem with my new iMac (a bonafide piece of . . . ).  I was able to download the .jar version, but it didn't work properly.  Now that I have downloaded the Mac version, I have found that it malfunctions exactly the same as the .jar version.  Change for the sake of change sucks.

Working JSchem bundle for Mac OS
« Reply #3 on: September 12, 2017, 03:12:41 pm »
Hello all,

sorry for the long silence. I hope everyone here is doing fine and happy building amps.

I have finally been able to find the time for fixing the Mac issues. I now have a Mac (well...actually it's a Hackintosh) for testing so I can confirm that it runs on Sierra.

Apple has stopped releasing Java versions after Java 6. Unfortunately, the replacement provided by Oracle (or OpenJDK) does not use the same app bundle format. Even worse, there is little and mostly outdated documentation about the bundling process. It seems that very few people use Java for making Mac apps. Anyways, I was finally able to create a new bundle for Mac OS which contains the Java runtime. This makes the bundle quite a bit larger (61MB) but you don't have to install Java. I have updated the web site (http://dhost.info/jschem) so you can download the new bundle right away.

Best regards,
Bernhard

I know I talked to you about helping, sorry I didn't get any time to do so, I started reading up on it and was a bit overwhelmed by how big the project was...  I'm glad you found time to get it updated, thanks!

Jschem was a great beginner schematic program. Now KiCad is available for free and much more advanced.

I'm running jschem on 10.14.6 (Mojave) on a 15" MBP retina from 2012, here's wht I had to do to get it to run.

Right click on JSchem.app, select 'show package contents'

Expand the Resources folder then the Java folder, double click JScem.jar

Still need to allow in Security and Privacy etc.

See screen caps attached

Jschem works fine on a Mac -- the main issue is that you must "allow" it to run on your computer.

If you get a message that Jschem can not be run, go to Security (General Tab) and click on the lock in the lower left corner.  Try to run the program again, and go back to the security tab where you will see a permission dialog that you can engage at that point.

They don't make it easy.  But, once you have run it once, the sailing is smooth, the harmonics are even, and the sustain is beyond belief.
