Tweed BluezMeister clean and FX amp
« on: August 21, 2016, 02:32:36 pm »
Made this for a friend of mine named Ryan.  He sort of apprenticed with me in building a Tele (he is a great wood worker in his own right).  I gave him a flamed maple top and a cedar body & he built a really nice guitar with it.

It's essentially a Tweed BluezMeister clean channel only with an active FX.  He wanted something that was a good pedal platform to get OD at home at reasonable volumes.  He tried my TBM on just the clean channel and used the midboost and preamp boost and liked it.

My wiring is never super neat but the amps are typically very quiet. Have not fired up the amp yet. However, unless there is a mistake, all the wiring should be done.  It's hard to get all of that into a smaller tweed style chassis.

With respect, Tubenit

Some pics of the amp.  Since I was making this for someone else, I used quite a few different wiring colors to make it easier for the owner to
follow the wiring pattern.

He paid for the parts. All the labor was free.  He is going to build a very nice walnut cabinet and has good skill sets for that type of wood working. I'm giving him a used Cannabis Rex speaker and a TimZee OD pedal that I wired up.

I'm anticipating this sounding great when it's all together.

Looks good!
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I am used to my power transformers have a center tap for the 6.3v wiring.  However, this Hammond 270EX does NOT have a 6.3v center tap.

So, at this point,  I am uncertain whether I need to create an artificial 6.3v center tap using 100ohm resistors?

I checked the two green wires and they connect to each other but show NO continuity to ground or the PT.

Anyone know whether the 6.3v wiring needs an artificial center tap or not for this power transformer?

Excellent!  OK, great ........... I had an artificial center tap wired up and then removed it originally.

I will re-install it.  THANKS Sluckey!  You excel at bailing me out of my amp building dilemmas!

   :notworthy:

This amp turned out great!  I am VERY happy with it.  Super quiet at idle.  Very touch sensitive.  I think it actually sounds better at both low and cranked volumes then my personal TBM  that has the overdrive channel in addition.  The low volume sounds about as rich in tone as when cranked on this one. That surprised me.

Really full rich tone, IMO.  Should be good with pedals.

I'm glad to hear it's doing great things.

Perhaps you've answered this in the past but why is the phase inverter not balanced with a 82k and 100k resistor set (like many Fender types) instead of making them both 100k?

Just wondering, I'm sure it sounds great.

Balanced is boring.

So is stocking 82K resistors.

Ironically, that is a schematic error.  The original TBM has 100k resistors.  But this one that I did for my friend actually has the 82k/100k.  I can't hear any significant difference.

I discovered with this amp cranked it can get a lot of sustain.
