VOX Model V 846 Wah Wah need 100K replacement pot question
« on: September 24, 2016, 05:00:35 pm »
Hi,

I see Doug sells a "Pro Pot" Wah replacement pot but it is 250K. I want to return this unit to as close to original as I can. The pot that is in the unit is a an original ICAR 100K.

How much will the 250K pot change the sound?

Thanks,

Billy

It will probably change the sound. I don't know how much. But it will definitely change the foot action. It's been about 10 years since I changed the original pot in my Thomas Crybaby. I didn't have any problem finding the correct 100K pot. Look around.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Hi Sluckey,

Thanks for the info. I found a source for the pot. I have never repaired one of these before but it looks like a pretty simple circuit. The only other part I don't have on hand is the inductor which I have no reason to think it is defective.

Thanks,

Billy

There's not much to go bad except the pot. It's an easy fix but can be aggravating to get the rack and pinion gear adjusted to give a good foot action. You just disengage the pot gear from the rack and pinion and rotate the pot a bit, then try the foot action. It took me over an hour to find the alignment that gave me the same action I had with the original pot.

Hey man nice to 'meet' you!   I don't know if this is considered hijacking a thread but if anybody is new 2 changing out their pots a common mistake is setting it to what they think is the down most position,             ( highest scream),  but not leaving room for when the switch is depressed which will almost surely shear one of the gears off the vertical (rack?) piece.

I'm not assuming you don't know this I'm just hoping to save anybody from a common mistake that I've heard about and learned about firsthand when I was a kid. I'm just replacing one of my old ones and was sort of in the same boat. I just did a post called old wahs new pots and  there might be something to help incase it's not quite where you want it.  As a disclaimer I try to be helpful but I'm no expert so it never hurts to double-check anything I say. Cheers. S&P

Sorry for the late response. Nice to meet you also. I am getting forgetful and don't look at everything I should. I got the  thing fixed without too much messing around. I also found that all the parts are available.  Thanks for the heads up.

Cheers,

Billy
