Altering trble in Hoffman Stout build...
« on: October 04, 2016, 04:38:48 am »
Hia all.  I have just finished the Hoffman Stoutbuild.  Great amp, allthough I feel I might wanna tame the treble a bit.  It has a very clear boost in what I hear as 2000-2500 hz.  I have changed to different tubes and different speakers, but it's always ther.  Any suggestions on how to try and tame this?

The Vox style "CUT" control does a pretty good job. It consists of a 250KA pot and a .005µF cap. Easy to temporarily install to see if it works for you. If you like it, you could just install the pot on the front panel, or if you don't want the pot, just set the pot to the position you like. Then measure it's resistance and replace with a fixed resistor.

Look at this schematic for more info...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Just another few suggestions to consider.  I strongly suggest trying the "enhance cap" safely using insulated alligator clipped wires.  IF you like the way it sounds ............ solder it in.  Same thing with the smoothing cap.

With respect, Tubenit

Hi.  I tried the suggestion from you Tubenit.  Sounded a bit more Marshally.  I would love to try Sluckeys as well, but didn't get where to install the pot?

I assume you used Hoffman's layout? If so...
