5e3 too much bass/not enough headroom
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a brand new 5e3 build and there's great tone in there somewhere, but for now there's too much bass (kinda flabby sounding). I did a search of previous posts and read where someone tried upping the cathode resistor to around 3K on the first preamp tube. I'm also hoping for some more headroom (well, Ok...SOME headroom) and may play around with the cathode cap as well.
Now some elementary questions; Is the 5e3 circuit consider "class A push-pull"? That is, in reference to a tube recieving manual? If it is, I can pop in a pair of old old RCA 6l6g (of the coke bottle variety) that I have layin' around. I'm running a b+ of around 340. I can figure out the dissipation once I pop'em in. Anyone see a problem? Besides bias? ...and making sure I'm not gonna blow my scrounged OT?....and filament current?

More headroom, you could try using a 12AY7 in the phase inverter.
Reduce flabby bottom end, try reducing the value of the coupling caps. I'm using .047 post phase inverter. I use a .02 on the normal channel and a .047 on the bright.
You could bring the B+ up a bit to help tighten the bottom end by using a 5V4 rectifier instead of the 5Y3. It will also help increase head room.
After that the only way to tighten the bottom end is via the speaker. What speaker are you using?
.02

When you changed the preamp cathode resistor did you also change the cap across it? Try a 1 mfd.
The stock 5E3 has too much bass and very little headroom - that's the way it's designed. Where do you think Neil Young gets that sound? :-)

thanks guys

Just wanted to say thanks for the sugesstions. I increased the cathode resistor of the bright channel to 2.7k and lowered the coupling cap of the same channel to .022. Perfect. Perfect. Clean enough to get by with the guitar volume down and absolutely snarling with the guitar volume up. I left the darker channel as is for now. Did I mention...perfect? Whoa....gotta go play.
