Many well known pilots (such as Jimmy Doolittle, Neil Armstrong, Chuck Yeager, and many others) say he was the best pilot - ever.  I saw him perform in his Shrike several times.  Just amazing...  Comments range from "he will be missed", "American hero", to "don't know how they will be able to close the casket with....(attachments)....that large".  I've read his autobiography, I think he would have liked the last one!
