May be a silly idea... But opinions needed
« on: November 08, 2016, 08:43:36 am »
I bought a couple of these small amp chassis, and this cool enclosure at a city-wide "musicians garage sale" last year, (along with a truck bed full of NOS vintage alnico speakers) for $100 last year. When I started down the slippery slope of wanting to build my first tube amp. My original intention was to build my little Princeton as a head only. I have a couple of small cabs it could accompany. It was mere luck how well the chassis fits inside the enclosure. There is plenty of room for the board, but I would have to open up the top for the power tranny. However, there is also going to have to be an additional tube socket added. Do you guys think there'd be enough room to keep things spread out enough? Or should I use these for something more like an epiphone VJR build? More pics of the chassis available if anyone is interested. I have a Chinese Princeton chassis as a backup plan

The chassis is large near 29cm and which are the other measures ?

Franco

p.s.: Without components you are able to push it in that cabinet .... but with installed components what will happen ?

29.5x15x50cm

4 spot welds attach  the bottom panel into the enclosure. Was already planning to drop it out and reattach with threaded inserts

The 5f2-A. Sorry to be so vague. The last picture in my original post shows the board size in relation to available space

Oh, now I understand

here you can see what can be done with a near 30cm x 16.5cm chassis

(I think you have no problem for a 5F2-A)

K, referring to reply #4... The second pic you posted is not a Princeton. It is a Deluxe Reverb AB763 schematic that has been edited. The normal channel and the tremolo circuits have been removed. Put that pic and this DR schematic side by side and I think you will agree...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

While on the subject. .. it's possible that the guy I bought these chassis from was unloading them cheaply because of an error in the case.

(See attached) this is a pretty standard AC inlet, but the nice threaded inserts are arranged oddly in relation to the cutout. I scoured Mouser for an hour last night and couldn't find one with the ears oriented this way.
If anyone knows of where I can get a couple, I'd be forever appreciative
What I did find was power inlet modules in a more standard orientation with an encapsulated, built-in line filter. Would something like that benefit future builds as a way to cut some of the household/venue AC hum?

Upon closer inspection of the Chinese 5f2 chassis, I've decided not to use it on this first build. Tube socket holes need to be opened up to allow level mounting, chrome finish already needs polishing..

So I have gone back to my original idea of making it a head only.

I started by roughing in the hole for the PT. Still needs some Dremel Love.

Also pencilled in the front layout. I wanted to move the fuse to the back of the chassis, but it would leave an open hole up front.

Question:

From the overhead pic of the chassis, where would be the best location for the second big tube socket? Would it be feasible to stick it between the two existing? Or would I be better suited to move it to the right of the 9-pin and eclipse the two .375" holes in the chassis? I am looking at the best-case compromise between function and aesthetic. My plan is to have all the unused holes TIG'd up and knocked flat after the final layout is worked out.

Updated pic of the inside, for scale and such. The closer pic shows proximity of the 9pin and .375" holes to speaker jacks

I really think you can use that chassis if willing to do some slight modifications.

The mounting ears are perfect, but the terminal itself is a little small. But, they'll get me by on these two chassis!

I was hoping they fit better ...

Can you use a small piece of thin aluminium to make an adaptor to be put on the back of the IEC in the inside of the chassis ?

Or, simply, use some black silicone on the inside of the chassis to plug the slots
