Wind your own Inductors?

Hey guys, I have a bunch of scavenged parts, and I'm thinking about trying to wind my own Toroidal choke for use in a guitar amp.  Has anyone ever messed around with this?   I found some calculators that let you put in the dimensions of your ferrous toroid, wire dimensions, and desired inductance, and it will calculate turns for you.   Is there a reason why a toroidal type choke may not be suitable for guitar amplification circuits?   I know you can buy a Hammond 193 at 5H rated to 800V on Mouser for $40, but I kind of like DIY stuff and I currently have more time than money.
