Chassis Thickness and Pot Thread depth
« on: January 18, 2017, 09:59:44 pm »
So, I'm working on putting together an amp in a cheap Deluxe Reverb style chassis I got off of ebay.  Everything fits great, after drilling a few extra holes.  But, when I put all of my pots on, I noticed I barely had any thread available to put the nuts on.  The chassis is pretty thick.  I was planning on making a faceplate using the plexi and laserprinter decal trick, but I'm now wondering whether even thin plexi would work.

Anyone ever run into this before?  It's looking like my only options are to either shift to using a thinner faceplate (maybe something aluminum) or get pots with longer threads like those that go on an Les Paul.  Any other bright ideas?

Maybe you could keep the faceplate thickness. Just drill bigger holes on it for the pots, so you can put the pot nut down to the chassis. After installing knobs, nobody would see it, for they are usually bigger than the nut in diametre.

Yes I run into that all the time so a long time ago I started ordering my pots with 3/8" long thread with 3/8" long shaft and diameter is also 3/8".

I order CTS pots from Mojotone as they are exactly what I want went using chassis with thicker faceplates.  On chassis with silk screen chassis regular Alpha pots can be used.  Also, the Alpha pots for Mojotone is correct size as well. They special order to use with their kits Fender chassis with thick faceplate.

Bourns also has correct pots for the thick faceplate/chassis situation and I get those from Steve at Apexjr  These pots are stiff feeling compared to Alpha or CTS though but good quality.
