Suggestions needed for new project
« on: April 18, 2017, 08:06:16 pm »
Hi all!

I scrounged up a pawn shop find! For $20, I got an old Crate 1x15 combo. Only thing missing is the solid state amp! Perfect!! The speaker looks ok and I'll not mess with it unless I have to.

The chassis area is 3.25 inches high by 17 inches wide by 13.75" deep as it sits. I plan on lowering the chassis area in the back to accommodate tubes (about 2 inches is about all I think I'll need). PLENTY of room to do one of many things!!

I'm thinking a double ended 6L6 or EL34 design with a full tone stack. I did the Plexi 6V6 (converted to 6L6) thing before. Maybe I could redo that (only better this time) or something else. I don't think I want reverb.

Suggestions?

Just be sure to remember tube layout in reference to the already installed speaker. Especially if you get a pre punched chassis.

A 17 inch width should be plenty to get you a nice push pull pair of what you're wanting. If you want to do this all custom, you could still use a 2.5 inch high chassis but design your faceplate to be larger and cover the rest of gap in enclosure.

I'm not sure what that means. I'm just wanting something in the general vicinity of 30-ish watts.

The whole thing is going to have to be custom. I have access to a sheet metal bender, so I've got that going for me.

not sure what that means
Single ended (SE), as apposed to push-pull(PP)
you probably won't get there with PSE unless you have lots of tubes n like the sound :icon_biggrin:

I need to learn more of the lingo! All I know is that it takes 2 6L6's or EL34's to get the headroom I want.
