Same with Warren Haynes lead sound
That horrible nasal overdrive tone from his Soldano
I re-tube his Soldano
I could never figure out why these guys liked that lead tone
John Petrucci on his solo record has that same horrible lead tone
Last time I saw Warren Haynes he was playing a PRS Amp and a Maple ES335. Sounded very Marshall like.
When Eddie used to lie about his amp mods, I think this may have started this. Then the guys started modding adding more gain stages. Don't get me wrong, I like additional tubes in the preamp, but the JCM 800 cold clipper is about as far as I like. It still cleans up well.
It is cool playing one of those amps as they do sustain for days, but Jack Pearson has been posted a few times now. That guy knows the secret and I wish I was better at it. Very light touch, simple amp turned up and volume controlled by his attack and a Tube Screamer to help with the slide.
That light touch keeps the tone more even and there is not much different in the attack and sustain so the ears are fooled from the lack of the volume drop.
I know you worked on Dickey's stuff too. Dickey Betts is a very underappreciated player. He has a light touch too, but looks like he doesn't. To me the neck position on his Gold Top in Blue Sky is a beautiful lead tone. Also, his trick of returning to the 3rd and repeating the pattern is way cool.
I guess you can tell I have stole a few licks.

We all do. Now you and Sluckey have gotten me listening to Surf. Used to be as close to Surf I would get was Rockabilly cause Duane Eddy played both. Then I saw Jerry Douglas do Walk Don't Run with his string bending and next thing you know it is in my head. Still is, I can hear it now.
That is rather ballsy playing when you have nothing but clean and verb. Miss a note and it stand out like a POAP.
