Power transformer without endbells location?

I'm wondering if a power transformer that doesn't have endbells like a Hammond 261g6 needs to be housed inside the chassis or if it's ok to mount it on the outside?

If you have the transformer outside, the chassis acts as shield between the transformer and the circuit (that is inside)

if, on the contrary, you put the transformer inside the chassis there is nothing that acts as shield between the transformer and the circuit

Hiwatt used PT & OT without bells and shields on preamp tubes (but theyr chassis are very large, plenty of room)

Hammond 261g6 is OK outside the chassis. But not where your kids or cats will poke sharp metal at it.
