power tube orientation
« on: September 25, 2017, 11:02:04 am »
working on layout for next project (TOS) and never thought much about considerations for power tube orientation (i.e. beam direction) to minimize interactions with the OT and the pre-amp tubes, if it's even a consideration at all.  I've had no issues to date with the power tubes in line with the OT (windings facing the tube - OT sits between PT and tube) along the back of the amp, and pre-amp tubes along the front (term strip builds), but honestly don't even know how to determine beam direction for a tube so could use some advice on that as well.  If there's already a thread on this let me know - i searched around and couldn't find any info on the topic.  Or is it even a consideration?

There's no "beam direction" that matters.

The only orientation you are likely to meet is: big naked-filament rectifiers (5U4), when worked horizontal, "should" have the filaments oriented so they won't sag onto the plates. The socket orientation is in the datasheet. But we very rarely do large rectifiers in lay-down. And I have never seen it make a difference. (Maybe old data not updated when tubes improved.)
