My first Tube Amp Project .. A AB763 Amp Single chanel....
« on: September 26, 2017, 06:29:47 am »
Hi all, i decided to build my first amp with this one, the AB763 single Chanel... I have a lot of question, but i just start with this one :

Which capacitors are the most important than the other on this board ? In which must i spend much money for good quality ?

That's all for the moment ;)

Thx
laurent

I highly recommend the Xicon caps that Hoffman sells. The board was designed with those small size caps in mind. You will have trouble trying to fit a bigger size cap in the small space allowed for most of the caps on that board. Look at the pic of the AB763 board in this recent message...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Your choice. I prefer metal.

I have been using Doug's Xicon caps for many years after experimenting with Mallory 150s, Orange drops, Real Mustard caps, paper in oil caps, Sozo mustards, and Sozo blues.  The Xicon caps sound great and are reasonably priced compared to all of the other cork sniffer brands with which I didn't find any significant tonal change.  The value of your capacitors is more important than the brand IMHO.   Carbon film, Metal film or Metal oxide are all fine resistor types.
Guides on your quest for tone.
Oh yeah, and I'm usually just kidding so don't take me too seriously.

Some people believe carbon resistors (especially carbon comp rather than carbon film) give a special "vintage" compared to newer metal types. But metal can add less noise, be more consistent with heat, and tolerate more heat without outright failure (though you should be respecting the power ratings of either type). In many ways they are "better" resistors. They're usually the type you'd find at general electronics stores or sites, and are usually affordable.
