Got a free Variac today

I was given a Powerstat Variac today!

0-140v, 50-60hz, 7.5a max, 1kva max

My question is, "is 7.5a adequate"?

Let your line fuse be your guide. If the fuse is rated for more than 7.5A don't plug that device into the variac. If the fuse size is less than 7.5A, safely plug it into the variac.
