New Jam featuring JoJo's Afterburner Treble Booster
« on: November 16, 2017, 10:58:01 pm »
Been a little quiet on the amateur (non Video) Sound Clip section so I thought I would post another one.  I've used an older version of Mixcraft but pretty much abandoned it for Garbage band due to the simplicity, but soon realized how limited it was.  Just got Mixcraft 7 Pro Studio and man it has more crap than I know what to do with!  So I just pulled up some samples and did a short jam.
Signal chain:  I'll let SG guess the guitar after listening! :icon_biggrin:   Into Jojo's Afterburner Treble Booster into my tube preamp.  This is based on an old BK Butler design, but tweaked for more gain and brighter.  The Afterburner kicks it into creamy goodness!  Direct into M-Audio interface.  Hats off to Jojo for a great design and build.  Almost forgot, I had Mixcraft do a slight slap-back and chorus on the guitar.

Jim,

Hey thanks for sharing that!  I am very favorably impressed with that tone.  I've always liked sort of a "vowel" tone and that pedal sure seems to capture that.

Jojo,  congrats on a great designed tone and pedal.  Bravo!

With respect, Jeff

  wow I am speechless...(almost)

THAT sounded like s#!+!!! (running joke all)

The keyboard groove sounded great and added a nice touch. Even some production value with a sort of microphone drop and the end or did the Major just blow? (where's Doc?)

Very cool indeed Kimo brah!

*thanks T but that was all Jimbob!

I thought that was the sound of his wife shooting out the speakers!  :dontknow:
The Major is safely away in the closet, she only makes him pull it out when she needs an ironing board

I'll let SG guess the guitar after listening!
I didn't know you owned a Steve Morse Signature Ernie Ball Harmonic Flamethrower OR that you've been watching all of his instructional videos, but you sound just like him. For a minute I thought this was off of his last solo album....GREAT STUFF!!

Isn't technology great?...for everyone else

Nice jumbo, but you did not nave your pig cranked. The power tubes were not singing. I guess then the afterburner wouldn,t shine as much.

BUT I do not hear any harmonic minor as blackmoree or demonic tritones like Tony. What's up, you going pop?

What  you say about him, you say about me?!?!
IF you also wear the same lame and outdated things like him? Then YES! I surely do - and you are no longer invited to Hawaii or any Tahiti or Caribbean sailing trips! I cannot be embarrassed and suffer the indignity of being associated by anyone with these kind of outdated and fashion-less statements. Oh the horror!

I can only imagine you pulling up with a loud flower shirt, giant straw hat, fanny pack, and wearing ankle high socks sporting those sandals with flip shades and a camera and binoculars hanging from your skinny (red)neck!  :l2:

Wait a second! This is the same as your Disneyland vacation pictures you sent me a while back? I knew I've see that look before!

Jim
Robyn Lawley.  Have fun!

Sure a guy can have fun, but if you send a professional musician your "fun" tracks, you gotta expect feedback.  You act as if you should l have never received any negative feedback.  Obviously you ignore Silvergun.

And hey look, I have played a Major quite a bit and they sound better with a Suhr Modern Custom and a Gibson ES335.

I will say I have never played a Strat through one BECAUSE I did not own one.  Now you got me started and I have 2 of the damn things.  Oh baby, I will tell you the truth.  If Joe hadn't kept me one the phone Monday night that rare 62 AVRI FSR Deluxe Vintage Player Rosewood with Ice Blue and Matching Headstock, the OFFICIAL NAME of the geetar, I might have modded the thing more than I should.

It now has a replaced pick guard, Fralin real54's and locking tuners.  Stays in tune real good, but it is still a screw on neck.  I think I am going to glue it.  Nah, Strats are not supposed to sustain, they are for clean plinky tones, right?

BTW, I really do like the Major so I build a low watt version and it sucked.  6V6 just do not have the sheer AUTHORITY necessary to go Space Trucking'.  Did not cut through the mix as easily either.

Perfessional???  Please, I taught him everything he knows!

So you played a Major with a 335?  Did you sound like this?  If not, turn in your Major card!

Combo of sweep picking, rock, Indian, and jazz runs.  In 1970?!?!?!  Nobody was close to him.  Purple were monsters.

That is why I used a 335.  Yes, I can play anything I am willing to learn.  It is real simple, just get out the guitar and learn it.  I was quite surprised how clean the Major sounded.  Even when cranking the amp never really gets distorted, but I remember the strange sustain.

BTW, now that is a guitar.

It took almost two years of experimenting to get that "Blackmore" tone.  I had two small box 50 watt heads that you just plugged in and turned up.  I sold them to buy the Major.  I thought I had made a huge mistake as I could not get any tone I liked.  Turning it up was just painful.  I heard that Ritchie used the treble booster part of the Hornby Skews Zonk Machine so I bought that.  It was the MKI sound.  I wanted the Made in Japan sound.  So I started buying anything I could get my hands on.  Fuzz and overdrive boxes sounded thin and contrived.  I tried the EH Screaming Tree, which had a lot more output than the Hornby and I was close (and noisy!), but no cigar.  On a whim, I bought a Barcus Berry acoustic guitar preamp.  Man that was it.  I could dial in the treble and drive as needed, it was real smooth.  On the head you turn the presence and treble to 0.  Mid to 1/4 ish depending on drive. Bass all the way up.  Plug into channel one, the hot one.  I could pretty much get anything from Sabbath, trower, and Ritchie with a turn of the knob.  The main secret sauce was a fine balance of preamp drive and letting the KT88's  get their groove on.  The real MIJ tone was turned way way up.  Again, balancing front end drive with enough to get the power tubes on edge.  I even bought two Altair power soaks (the infamous burner element resistive network).  They sounded pretty darn good.  Talking with Dawk years later I now know what Marshall did for Ritchie in the MKII years and what Dawk did for Ritchie in the MKIII and Rainbow years.  I had gotten close using outboard devices to replicate what they did internally.  I had to make it usable in a variety of environments from small bars to outdoors and even a big auditorium for a battle of the bands - literally days after Sabbath had played there.  It was not an easy journey and good KT88's were not any cheaper in the 70's and 80's than the good crappy ones of today.  Ritchie didn't have to worry about that!  But man THAT tone can not be replicated.  It was worth the effort.

Learn from them? Nope, not even close.  He got lessons from Big Jim Sullivan.  Ritchie has always said he was THE best.  Listen to this first run and close your eyes.  Pretty much Ritchie!  Big Jim was an awesome player and Ritchie always gave him his due.  Big Jim also taught Jimmy Page.  Although he never has admitted who he learned his chops from.  This video is fantastic.

Here he is playing with some guy YOU may recognize!

Quit my job down at the carwash.

I certainly know Big Jim Sullivan, but who is that other guy?  I think he may be able to play other peoples songs better than they can.  Thats what Chet said about Jerry, but what does Chet Atkins know about guitar?  Right!

I was in Nashville 5 weeks ago at Third and Lindley after Jerry Reed was inducted and honored.  That is where the party went.  I swear you couldn't swing a dead cat by its tail and not hit a tremendous player.

You know what is so funny to me?  I know guitar players who do not know Jerry Reed even played guitar.  They say they never listen to Country.  Some are even surprised it was him doing the songs on Smokey and the Bandit.  Now don't play with yourself, you can think about it, but don't do it.

Whats up Pussycat?

Wow, 2 greats.  Great post, I have never seen this.

Wow Ed!  That is too cool!  Did you even get a chance to say "Hay!" to Jerry?  That is amazing.  He's no spring chicken any more.  Certainly a well deserved honor!  Did you get a selfie with Jerry? :icon_biggrin:  You get the feeling sometimes that we are a dwindling breed...?  Sigh....  Although check this out.  It's old but maybe there is hope.  Listen to this metal band's interpretation of the iconic Simon and Garfunkel tune!

I have spoken to Jerry Reed Hubbard, but Jimbob, Jerry Passed Away September 1, 2008.  However he was born on March 20th, which is a holiday for me.

I actually listen to Disturbed a lot, Disturbing ain't it.  At my house you will hear George Jones and next it may be Sabbath.  I can assure you it is NOT through a 11.2 AV system either.

No worries Jim.  I don't really do selfies, remember my rant on all my wasted time about Social Media?  Anyway, this forum and another where I mostly read is about all I do with online socializing, However if Jerry had been there I would have asked to jam with him on this which I learned the same day I learned Little Wing.
