18 watt chassis, head or combo?

I bought this butchered chassis, want to make a 6V6 Plexi. Would this chassis be best suited for a head or single 12 combo? I have an 18 watt Marshall combo but the tubes are on the side pointing down, this chassis has the tubes up...?

I prefer heads, but I have a few speaker cabinets.  Strangely enough I get a lot more flexibility plus it is easy to see which speaker prefer.  This changes often.  For instance, sometimes a 93db is best and sometimes 100db like a jbl.


Just built a 2, 8" cab using Warehouse $39 speakers.  Has a angle up and a center baffle.  Ported one side.  Turned out really nice.  Guy is using it around here in small clubs.

I wanted to make a 12 (Celestion GH1230) combo so one wouldn't have to lug a head and cab, if I sell it which is most likely.  If I made a head, I like heads better too, the controls would be at the bottom, that's ok. And heat would rise away from the board.


The combo with a 12 would sell faster after I'm done with it, ha but the tubes would be inside, facing the front perpendicular to controls, all the heat would be trapped in the amp Even though the combo would have a vent on top to dissipate heat, I'm wonder about excess heat trapped ...?  I also wanted to put a VVR in, past experience with the 18 Watt Marshall and VVR, the Mosfet blew two times, till I put a 2" PC processor fan and small heat sink in, wired off the filament windings rectified to DC. This gave the 12vdc fan about 5vdc, low enough to not really hear the fan. Didn't want to go the fan route but might have too.   


Bottom line, I'm leaning to a combo, will I have a heat problem? Don't like small speakers, two tens ok but a 12 will be a small cabinet, easier to sell. Was this chassis originally made for a combo or head. I think it's a Ceriatone chassis.

. Sluckey, if you made a combo, would you use the sockets as they are or drill them on the side? Being on the bottom of the chassis when in the 18 watt cab.

Why not just make an 18 watt head? My 18 watt head doesn't have a problem with heat buildup, and as you say you could vent it. The tubes are near the rear of the head  so they can vent from the back too. I think a head is a better deal. Carrying two lighter things into the club is a plus IMHO, and the versatility of a head to use many different cabs is a definite plus. Mine has 4-8-16 ohm taps which is nice to have as well.

The chassis is most likely suited for a head cab, came with front and back faceplates. TMB front faceplate with a master volume. Mresistor, you are right I have a Marshall 18 watt combo and it’s heavy, carrying a head, one trip then a cab is way easier. Been years since I lugged amps in bars. And I want to sell this amp, chassis’s been collecting dust for five years. So yeah a head it is. I see all these 6v6 plexi’s on all the forums and that’s an amp I would like to have (for home playing). I’ll take the money and build a plexi. Guess I changed my mind faster than I change my underpants
