Bolt actions: AR Platform

The idea's been around but hard to implement.  Just found out that Ruger is making them.  Should be legal everywhere, 'cause they're bolt action, not semi-auto.  But check your state & local laws.

I think this is Rugers response to the Savage 110 line.  Functional and light, easy to customize.  Big $$$$ tho.  Not a fan of the Ruger adjustable stocks as they seem a little tinker-toy to me.  Seems like a way to have a close encounter with the scope - dont want to look like Petey from Our Gang...

I used to be in that camp.  But when my son, as an adult, got into rifles, an AR-15 is just a normal rifle to him & his generation, actually developed in the same century in which he was born.  So, I got used to AR's, and eventually became a fan.


Since he got kids of his own, we haven't been so active.  Bolt action AR style uppers were just coming out, and were rather exotic, custom jobs.


@Ritchie200.  Yeah, I'm not pushing Ruger per se.  But it's nice to see that a major maker is addressing this market, while preserving the AR platform. 

@ Dummyload:  I guess BMG stands for Big Mother Gun!  I'd trust McCutchen that a standard lower can handle that beast.  Seems like a beefy buffer assembly would be in order.  I wonder how recoil would be compared to .338 Winchester Magnum which I'm familiar with.

the lower doesn't take a beating - the upper does. the lower is just a carrier for the fire control mechanism.

50BMG muzzle energy is ~10Klbf higher than 338WM, so i'd imagine the recoil is brutal.

my, then brother-in-law asked if I knew where he could sight in his "rifle", said he needed 500 yard range.  I got permission from the neighbor to access the pipeline that ran through the woods behind my house.

we mounted a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood on the Cherokee, some sand bags and mounted the gun below 

can't find the pics, but my wife has an amazing grin after firing 3 rounds down range, we shot up 100 rounds
was a nice day for clearing.... trees!

But the buffer tube / stock is built off the lower, so the recoil energy must get transferred from barrel > upper > lower.   I suspect the pressure points would be the front & rear takedown pins, and the buffertube ring a the rear of the lower.  The inertia of the lower plus your shoulder and body mass keeping the lower from a totally free ride backwards.  There must be pressure on the points mentioned.  How much or how significant this is I don't know.

So I'm thinking there must be some recoil reduction mechanism in the buffer tube, or somewhere.  The 20mm referenced by Ritchie200 does specify low recoil, but doesn't say how it's achieved - and though it looks AR-ish, it's not built on an AR platform per se.

it's a flatter shooting round then the .308. for target shooting i prefer it over the .308. i don't hunt, so sorry, no feedback in that regard.

Yeah, for target shooting the Creedmoor seems very well respected.  My memory is that it launched the move to bolt action AR's, which were originally custom conversions motivated by that round.  Given Creedmoor bullet weight & energy, it seems suitable for big game.  It also works in a a true AR platform.  I.e., 30 calibers seem to overpower the true AR platform.  That doesn't seem to matter much any more as now the bigger calibers are  well-built in the AR "style" of platform.
