Tube rectifier questions?
« on: March 24, 2018, 12:56:26 pm »
Typically I have been using used xfrmrs which are not designed for tubes so I have been using a high voltage and separate filament transformers with a bridge rectifier for high voltage. I acquired a 6x5 tube and was wondering if that could be used with that type transformer config? For instance I have a 480volt xfrmr it has no center tap but I know about artificial center taps with 2 resistors connecting between the two legs.would that effectively make a situation like a 480 c.f. or 240-0-240. Doing that with a separate 6volt xfrmr attached to heaters as per a typical tube rectifier schematics. Can that be done? I would like to try a tube rectifier with what I have on hand? In theory it seems like I can do this but being a tube newbie(Tubie?) I though it best to ask before I start a fire lol.

You can't do that! You must have a real centertap.

See Hybrid Bridge Rectifier on this page for another option...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks sluckey I was afraid of that. I was just hoping so I could try it but oh well. I did however luck out and get my hands on a 1951 revere reel to reel for 20 bucks. The transformer works although I can't find spec on it. The tube comp was 2x 6j7 1x 6sl7 1x6k6 1x 6v6 with the 6x5 rectifier. I am thinking of using that xfrmr and building a valco something or other clone. Prob have to do a spectator or 1615 . I also have another 6x5 with no tranny to work with. Maybe if the supro sounds good I will look for another xfrmr . Right now I am building my 4th homee brew which I will use o e of my octal power tube with some preamp situation.  There's so many things I want to try and not enough time and money to do it.

build a breadboard, work out the kinks, take good notes, then when you get that $100 scratch-off, walla, build time
