I never liked them.

For small heat, alligator clips are better than nothing.

For real heat, or real work: Kelly forceps, hemostats, alligator forceps, Bulldogs forceps, pean. Doctor-grade tools are very expensive (or now, disposable plastic); guitar repair and other small-craft tool suppliers have decent tools at better prices.

There's also needle-nose pliers with a rubber band.

Those are hemostats.  Can be a bit big & clumsy as a heat sink on small parts, though I have used them because I already have them (great for flyfishing!).  But an assortment of alligator clips should already be within reach.

Yes. Hemostats are also good for removing tiny hooks from the mouths of fish, especially delicate fish.

I caught about 50 everglade fish on small poppers (wood flies) used the hemostats on most
they are also made from hi-grade stainless so they were great for fishing metal from MRI's, sadly I'm down to 3, one in the fishing box, one in the tool box n one in the humidor

Notes:

"Sweat" is slang for soldering copper water fittings.

In today's shop, Aluminum scrap is more common than copper bars. Aluminum will work but can't be soldered. Since the thing is not supposed to get hot, epoxy should work.

The 1/8" is about 3mm which I assume is common in your area. Check that it will fit the jaw of an available "crocodile" (alligator) clip without too much work. The 1/4" height and the long slope have to fit the alligator's jaw-angle and still open a little more. I guess the 45 degree nose bevel is so it will fit in tight spaces. 1-1/2" length is of course 35-40mm, more or less to taste.

The comments on resistors may be true for very old/cheap composition resistors. Nearly all resistors made in the Guitar-amp era should not be so heat sensitive. I find it interesting because this was THE tool for soldering transistors, which were not yet commercially available in 1951.
