CJ11 clone build
« on: May 25, 2018, 07:39:11 am »
Hi everyone,  I am fairly new to this forum and have not posted much ( I hang out at ampgarage) but I have learned a lot and wanted to give back a bit.   I was contemplating weather to build a hoSo56 or a Cj11 style amp a while back and ended up building a CJ11 clone. I built it in a 5e3 chassis. I need to make a proper faceplate.

I made a youtube video with my friend Dave playing guitar.
Here is the video, the only change from the schematic that I made here was that I increased the  first power supply cap from 22uf to 47uf this made  the overdrive tighter and not so loose.   I changed the cathode resistor on V1b from 3.3K to 2.3K , the tone controls sounded less sterile when I lowered this resistor.
I really like the  sound of the amp when the boost switch is kicked in and negative feedback is on, it gets really raunchy sounding!
I also put in a negative feedback switch as seen on Rob Robinettes site for 5e3.
The amp sounds great witch a Strat and also sounds nice with a les paul especially if your using the Busrstbucker Pro pickups with less mids.  Here is the link.  It gets really raunchy sounding at the 3:47 mark! There is no sound editing, its right from the video camera, I have not processed the audio from the sm57 mic yet, its hanging from the cabinet, that should sound better.

I attached a copy of the schematic too.

Cheers

Guy

Nice sounding amp.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thank you everyone.  My friend Dave is a big help on making amps sound good !

I was amazed at how little changes  in  V1b cathode resistor effected the overall sound of the Treble Bass controls.
From more sterile with larger resister to more organic sounding with a smaller resister.

Cheers

Great build! Sounds awesome. Dave sounds good too. What speaker are you using?

Thanks Joe. The speaker I used here is a Celestion G1265.  The original CJ 11 amp came with a 25 watt Greenback .  I need to try it with a Greenback in the near future to here the difference.

Cheers

Guy
