Reverb spring placement, upcoming build
« on: June 01, 2018, 05:00:51 pm »
I stumbled onto Sluckey's amp site through a thread here last night. Great stuff, and I saw one of his amps that has a reverb spring super close to the chassis. I'd always been afraid of putting a tank too close to the power supply/AC but I was pretty excited to see his amp because it means that if I plan the layout carefully I should have plenty of room to put a tank in a cool old Bell 5630 PA amp I have. Pix attached are not mine; my amp's stored away .. grabbed these ones online.
Anyway, I'm probably going to build a Princeton without tremolo. The amp has 6L6gs so I'm going to use the original iron. I'm going to use a 9" reverb tank and it'll fit inside the cage in a bunch of different orientations, so that's not a problem.
My question is this:
If I'm going to put the tank inside the cage, so close to AC, what would be the best possible placement/orientation? If I need to move the transformers I will; just want to know what the best option would be.
The chassis is about 14" by 12". The power and output transformer are at the left when looking at the back, and the rectifier and output sockets are just behind them, pretty much right up against the back panel. All the preamp tubes and mic transformer sockets are up front, just behind the pots.
I'll post a photo of the interior when I get a chance to grab it and open it up.

Thanks!

It's OK to put the 8Ω tank input close to the power transformer. But keep the hi impedance tank output as far away from the PT as you can. Should be easy with a 9" unit.

Look at these three amps for some ideas of how to mount the tank inside a head...

Also, some amps mount the tank on the cab front panel above the control panel.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Great, that's the advice I was looking for. Given that I think the best place for me to do it is just right in front of the transformers, mounted on edge with springs facing forward and output jack to far right, right next to the preamp-driver tubes.
Thanks!
