Sluckey's Dual Marshall Build (or not?)
« on: June 22, 2018, 04:57:46 pm »
Hopefully Sluckey you've got some of the original documentation for me on this, but I was thinking of retooling my old ac100 that's since blown out again (and since it was my second build, I figure gutting and starting a new amp in it may be just the thing) into a marshall 100 of some type.  I was googling and found on the marshall forum this thread: http://www.marshallforum.com/threads/building-a-dual-2204-1987-preamp.98855/ and it's got pictures of a sluckey dual preamp JMP Plexi and a JCM-800 2204 in one preamp.  I've got the transformers and chassis that would be able to handle this just fine, so I was thinking it would be perfect for my first marshall build.

You still have those files around somewhere?  recommend it?  It seems from the tone lizard links as well, I could do some simple switching in those areas he 'removes' so you can either keep the stock values or remove them, so I get some variability pretty easily.  Like the treble cap being removable as a type of bright switch etc.

At any rate, I was going to do my Vox AC30 mixup but had some good feedback on it and am back at the drawing board on that amp and need a new project in the interim :D

I built a 20W version of the dual marshall late last year and it's my go-to gigging amp.  I did a handful of mods, including a high-gain switch on the JCM800 which swaps out the 10k Rk on stage 2 for a 2.7K/2uf, and added a footswitchable lead boost - it's an awesome amp.  I run the MV at around 2/3 on stage which pushes the 6V6's well into distortion - like a JCM800 on full throttle but at reasonable volumes.
I posted a build thread on here which should be easy to find.

Excellent thanks!  I seem to be  unable to find the original files, they're referenced to sluckeys old site but not on the new one.

I'd love to lookup yours too, I'll check that out.

Here's the original file...

     http://sluckeyamps.com/misc/_Marshall_Dual_50.pdf

I removed the link to this file because I never built it and don't intend to build it. It was offered in request by a forum member. Several people have successfully built this. I offer no support.  :icon_biggrin:

That's a great design!

I might have to try that one as well.

That file will likely disappear soon from my website. If you want it, better save it.

Oh yes sorry I got that copy too, thanks.  I am doing something slightly different in that I'm using 50/50 500V cans instead of the ones on the board, so I may try to print it, then cut out those caps on board, and the dropper resistors (they can go on the cans pretty easily in most cases) and then splice it together and see if I can make one that doesn't look too horribad :D

Good idea, thank you.

This is for a 50 Watt Design with El34’s correct?

I wonder if it would be too much to use a 3-way switch to optionally cascade V1 and V2?

I'd suspect it would be prety high gain, so you'd need to do a decent amount of additional modification to the circuit to shape tone a bit in that mode and decrease the overall output so it's not slamming the PI too hard.  I'm building it as is, but was thinking of doing a a, b, or a and b mode switching setup, but just realized that wont work because the signals are inverted /sigh.

Yeah that's about what I was thinking. I didn't consider the signal inversion either. Thanks!

Sluckey prefers large bottles and jammin pool side.  He never built this, but take a look at the "brown papers."  Just like a few of us around here, we used to reach up to dial in our amps, sadly we now reach down.

I know it has gotta be hot down there, so hot you could smoke in smokey while using an Icehouse Bottle for slide.  Jump in the pool with guitar in hand and find out how good your grounding is.

My pool is in-ground and I've always been well grounded. All good here.
