Hurricane Florence

I sincerely hope you guys close to Florence, are safe and the damage is minimal, terrible news now that the storm is expected to hover over the coast for a day or two then to into the heart of Georgia. Button down the hatches, and stay safe.

I'm in Charlotte, NC and early this morning Wed, the Accuweather had 52 mph winds Thursday night, 60 mph winds Friday and 70 mph winds Sunday.

That's now changed and the only severe winds are forecasted at 52 mph gusts Thurs night.  It is a concern for me as I have two VERY large trees within falling distance of my home.  One being a 120Ft+ tall poplar.

70-90 foot storm-falls are all too common on my land, and still very exciting. I took-down a bunch last year but still many to go.

I thought the real threat was rain? We've been dry all summer, then Tuesday got 3.6 inches in 12 hours. Everything filled-up. Got wet-spots around the chimney. My lawn chair got wet!!! The recovery effort took almost a minute. I hear you are promised *feet* of rain? You are gonna need a bigger mop.

One of the all time HIGHPOINTS in my life was going through a cat II/III in the Atlantic, Me and another Dave, our computer guy, lashed ourselves outside, to the wing deck, O3 level.  sitting in the trough, looking up at 60+ft walls of water, knowing you better be able to hold your breath 2-3min. IIRC ~6-8hrs to the eye. Inside the eye, 2AM the stars lit the ocean, flat seas, yup, 6-8hrs out the other side!!!

No trees down at this point and we still have power.  Have around 40 mph gusts late yesterday into the evening.  I have ALOT of very tall trees in the woods behind me. It was remarkable watching how violently they were whipping around.  I walked down into the woods late afternoon and looked up at the tree tops when a strong wind burst hit.  WOW! 

I've been thru 5 hurricanes in my life with 4 direct hits in the 2 yrs when I lived in Taiwan in early 60's.  One of the hurricanes put my school about 4 feet under water & the eye of the hurricane passed over the top of my house. What a remarkable experience to see blue clear skies with a donut wall of black clouds around me. When the eye was over us, we went out gathered some of the chickens that were still around, boarded up stuff more and ran back inside for the 2nd half of the storm. Still have very vivid memories of all of that. My dad (Air Force) was an advisor to the Taiwanese air force when we were stationed there.

Today Sat is the real test.  46mph gusts in forecast and we've already had considerable rain with 12 inches anticipated overall by Sunday evening.

I truly hope you do NOT get the heavy rain and wind we've had in Charlotte.  I've lived here since Feb '99 & this is by far the worst sustained heavy wind and rain that I've seen.  This started here late Friday afternoon and persists still this morning. Winds last night were much worse then the forecasts for Charlotte.  We had 40 mph +  with saturated ground at 4 am.

There is a website posting sustained winds and gust speeds at the Charlotte airport about 6 miles from me, so I was fortunate to be able to monitor things with that.

We slept in the living room last night as I was not sure if the giant poplar would be standing this morning. And our master bedroom and sunroom that I built in 2017 was in easy reach of that tree IF it fell.

With how violently the trees sway and whipped around,  I am amazed we did not lose a tree or power!  We've lost trees and power with much less in the past.

My utilities are all under ground, but can't do anything about the way they feed the power from a substation

What kind of wind are you getting there?   Wind has finally subsided here in Charlotte.

Just down my street at neighbors house, and oak fell took out a Bradford pear tree and both trees crashed on a new car.

due to an unsecured trampoline!

We have continued rain here, but the wind remains mild.  Thank goodness!  Ground is very saturated now.  4 plus inches in the last 24 hrs.

We had 40+ mph wind gusts with 30+ sustained winds for quite a few hrs after the ground was saturated. 

We did not lose a tree and the 120ft poplar still stands which I view a miracle given their commonly shallow root systems.  Trees were violently whipped around.  It is amazing how much they can move and not break or topple. When the winds were at their worst, they constantly looked as though they would snap or fall.

No flooding.

New report: North Carolina highways covered in dead fish ? ? ?

(I assume little bits, not a whole state.)

Not news here. Every couple years a fish or bait truck tips. First year here we had herring spilled over several roads near my house. This year a lobster shipment spilled on a main highway-- PETA wanted to put up a memorial.

Not to mention two of my neighbors are lobstermen and there is always a smell of bait.
