 Supro talk

Does anyone own a supro amp? Got any insights on the circuits and what makes them special? Does anyone know which one jimmy page used for Led Zep 1? Sure is a distinctive tone compared to marshalls, fender and such.

Funnily enough I took my two Chicago 51 amps out to play today. Our harp player used one and I used the other one.

What makes them special? Point to point wiring, pentode preamp tubes, cheap, undersized transformers, and low powered speakers. My two Supros are tone machines. Dirty and gritty, perfect with a Les Paul.

 Supro S-6424
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a matter of huge speculation and debate on all the forums. The general concensus is that it most likely has to be the Supro S-6424 only because of the way Jimmy Page has described the amp in his interviews, he says it "the small Supro", which excludes the Thunderbird which is the larger of the supro's, the Supro S-6424 is the smallest combo using 1x12" speaker.

There are schematics for it around the internet (I can email you one if you can't find one), it had a pair of cathode biased 6973 output tubes, and used 3 12AX7's, 1 Vol & 1 Tone knob for each channel (2 Ch.), no MV, and used a 5Y3 rect tube.

Though it's known as "Supro" I think it was manufactured (or distibuted) by "Valco" and "Gretch".

I believe he also used a boost pedal on the first album with the supro which would affect things quit a bit too.

i fixed one for a friend, it was a little champ looking thing. i couldnt find the exact schem for it on schematic heaven, but a close one. all it needed was to rearrange the funky heater setup, recap and a 3prong cord and it sounded good, a little voxish, but good.

being in the bargan bin category at schematic heaven i didnt think supro had much of a following or worth much, then a few months ago i saw the same little amp w/a bid for $350 on Ebay! having been inside the amp the only thing of value would be the 8" jensen alinco.
