Fender 6G3 build, quick question
« on: November 21, 2018, 11:58:07 am »

Hi all, Happy Thanksgiving.
A few quick questions:
I'm thinking about building a single channel Fender 6G3 circuit, using 19w 6L6Gs instead of 6V6s. My question is regarding the tremolo: I have heard the type of tremolo used in the 6G3 doesn't respond as well to higher-wattage output stages. Am I going to have an issue building it with the 6G3 bias modulating tremolo, or should I use a different tremolo circuit?

Also, this is going on an old Altec Lansing chassis I bought (already stripped of transformers) on eBay. This chassis has all octal sockets so I plan to use 6SL7 for two out of the three octal tubes. I plan on using a 6SC7 for the phase inverter circuit as the original 6G3 cathodes are tied together, as they are internally on the 6SC7.

Any pitfalls you can see coming? I can build to a schematic, but don't know if I'm going to introduce any gain or other issues using 6SL7s early on.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

I would look through some old Ampeg schematics. You'll find something much closer to your ideas.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Ampeg Jet J12 sounds really good. If I had 7591 tubes and an output transformer matched to them I'd do it stock. I'll probably do it with the 6L6gs I have with a nice potted Chicago output transformer. I also have some 6BG6s I've had laying around forever. Maybe I'll use those. It has a cage so I'm not worried about the top plate on them.
I may improve the tremolo section based on Sluckey's redrawn schematic for this amp. Tried it one time before and love it.

The tremolo will work much better with 7591s or 6V6s than it will with 6L6s.
