How ZZ Top ruined their own songs...

I've seen them live numerous times going back to their first album tour.  They were always like Sabbath, even as an opening act their sound was impeccable.  This has to be the worst sounding live clip I have ever heard from them.  Nasally crap with intonation issues you can even hear through the peaky hollow noise.  Can anyone guess what the problem is?

Sure,  before they released the video,   his actually great Tele sound was overdubbed back in the studio with someone playing a strat!
