Re-coning speaker changing impedance and wattage.
« on: February 08, 2019, 10:36:35 am »
Last weekend I found a damaged 50 watt 16 ohm 12" Fryette speaker at the dump. I took it home and have been considering re-coning it and changing the voice coil to 8 ohm. The only 8 ohm voice coil I have been able to find is for a 30 watt speaker. If I try to use this coil, will the magnet be too strong for it. How critical is the matching of the magnet with the wattage and how will the sound change, if at all?

It appears the the fryette speaks are made by eminence. Going from 50 to 30 should not be a problem with the existing magnet. That’s not a big change in the grand scheme of things - from what I understand.  However, did you check these guys?

Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Yes, I have checked these guys out. They didn’t have what I was looking for. The gap for the voice coil is particularly tight on these speakers so it’s essential to get the exact fit. Ted Weber has a better selection of re-coning parts IMO.
