Looking for possible builder for 6V6 Plexi
« on: February 27, 2019, 08:04:40 pm »
Hello all,

I have an old solid state Marshall 5010 1X12 combo that I'm looking to gut and turn into a 6v6 Plexi with an effects loop and PPIMV. It currently has a high and low input which I would like retain and internally jumper the channels so that I can still use the Bright and Normal channel volumes. I'm basically looking to strip the old Marshall chassis clean, drill the required holes, and build the new amp into it. It's a large chassis and can easily fit a 50 watt 1987 style board. I've been reading as much information as I can to try and learn what has to be done, but it might be a better outcome for me if I found an experienced builder to take on the project. If anyone is interested or can recommend someone who would be, please let me know.

Thanks!
John

You might want to specify your location that kind of build often works best if they're nearby.  Reduces shipping costs, chances of damage while shipping etc.

I recently built a 6V6 plexi and really like it. Used some transformers from an old Hammond A0-43 that worked well.
It's never a dumb question if it prevents a dumb mistake.

Yeah I'm in the Seattle area, so that's literally on the opposite coast, Shipping is going to cost a ton back and forth etc.  I'd be interested in doing it, but i don't think it's worth it to you to add that cross country shipping.  Hopefully someone fairly local would be available to do it.

If you don't mind me asking, how much would you charge for labor for the 6v6 Plexi build?

Labor is one thing but parts cost for this conversion would be around $400 to $500.

I have one already built if you are interested.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

if you can grab sluckey's I'd snap that up in a heartbeat.  The parts cost MFowler listed seems pretty spot on, and then the labor is a bit hard to guess on a chassis I've never worked on, that's an old solid state amp, means trying to find PT and OT that will fit, and the chassis' are often pretty tiny.  Fitting the bits inside would definitely be challenging on time.  You're possibly looking at another 200-400 in labor depending on how hard it is to do it, and it's even entirely possible the chassis is just too small to fit the tube sockets etc.  No way of knowing until I actually saw it.  Again, a local tech would make this a lot easier, because you could bring it by, have them look at it and determine what they think options are etc.

John,

That is an unbelievable deal offered by one of the most knowledgeable forum members (& moderators).  Honestly, parts alone really would likely run $400-500 at least.  On top of that, he obviously has phenomenal documentation of his work.

Not trying to talk you in to it. You should buy whatever you want.  I am just trying to convey some information so you can make an informed choice.

With respect, Tubenit
