Texas Raptor amp

OK, it's kind of a goofy name but it's a GREAT amp!  I made a CBS-Turbo for my son as a gift but he wanted more overdrive. So I rewired it into this. I told him it was "necessary" to give it a name so he picked that one.  You know kinda like Gibson "hawk" or "falcon" .....
 ;) ;D

The result is a very versatile amp with the switches. It can get a clean/clear sound ......... or head towards the ZZ Top territory of their earlier stuff.  It has remarkable sustain, overdrive without being muddy sounding at all. Chording or playing lead ....... you can still hear all the notes. Using 'buckers, my son actually got some of the ZZ Top "sqwauk" that you hear on La Grange and other tunes.

The amp is amazingly loud given it's rated 20watts and cathode biased.

He is putting it into a sappelle custom cab using an Emminence Cannabis Rex speaker. Hopefully, I'll have pics of it later.

UPDATE: 3/31/08

I changed the tone stack from the James/Baxandall to a typical Marshall type tone stack.  The James left the treble notes sounding too hi-fi-ish.   The Marshall tone stack gave the amp a more balanced sound to it with a smoother overdriven treble.

Tubenit, you linked to this in another thread, so I figured I'd reply here, rather than potentially hijack that one.

Regarding the 2K2 screen resistors on the 6V6's, what was the design decision behind using 2K2 rather than the more commonly seen 1K (or 470R in some cases)?

I like a more compressed sound, so I typically use 2.2k resistors for that which emulates that more.

Thanks tubenit , I like a bit of compression also. I will likely use Edcor Iron . The one who copied this build on amp garage said you could use 6L6 or 6v6 (biased properly )
