Resistor “kit/bulk” multi-value bundles?
« on: June 27, 2019, 07:38:11 pm »
Hey guys, First time posting here! Ive loved Hoffman as a great amp parts resource for a long time, Finally got around to joining the discussion board.

-My main interest has really been building/modifying valve amplifiers, but I recently got the itch to build some pedal circuits. The thing about pedals though, is the larger wattage & size parts for amps aren’t a good fit for a pedal pcb or tag board that’s going in an enclosure. Id like to ask what you guys think of buying one of those bulk deals for like 400+ 1/4 watt Metal Film resistors for example? I’m certainly going to need them, but the thing about pedals is that the ohm values can vary a great deal circuit to circuit.. And much fewer “standard type” values like you see with tube amps. What’s your opinion on this and any recommendations on vendors?? Thanks!!

I bought a box of 1000 for like $8 off of eBay. They shipped from China. They've been very accurate so far.

I have been using a 1/2W MF kit from eBay by a vendor named "Joe Knows Electronics." They have several kits in all kinds of wattages and resistor types. Been using that kit for several years now... came in a nice cardboard box with individually labeled ziplock baggies for each value and the price was very reasonable. When a value gets low, I add 10 to my next order from my favorite amp parts supplier or if ordering for a specific project I will order what I need if I don't have enough on-hand or it drives my quantity too low.

You do get a lot of values you will likely never ever use in a tube amp, but once in a while they find their way into another project. Even still, love the kit.

+1  for the smaller 1/8 watt resistor bundles on ebay.  Some of the sellers even let you choose resistor values.

Ditto!

I recently added a kit of small 1/4 W resistors as well, mostly for tinkering with solid-state electronics - DIY guitar pedals for instance.

I tend to build many experimental circuits and tinker with them, rather than build a few complete well-known and tested circuits. Having a small stockpile of components - particularly resistors and capacitors, but also 1/4" jacks, pots, diodes, op-amps, tube sockets, etc - is key to being able to build something when the idea strikes, rather than waiting two weeks for parts to arrive, and losing creative energy in the meantime. And it ends up cheaper too, not having to pay postage repeatedly every time you need $10 worth of parts.

IMO 1/8W resistors don't belong in a tube circuit.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Totally agree but... OP was asking about kits for pedal building, so he was asking about 1/4-watt, which is the minimum I would personally use for pedals... for tube amps everything is 1/2-watt (and above as appropriate of course.)

You can get 1/4-watt 1% MF resistors really tiny now so stuffing 1/4-watts into a small pedal enclosure is even easier now than it used to be.

buncha babies have probably never even seen an 0201 SMD resistor.

Hey Tony of course they haven't seen them... no one can.... Wait for it.... Because they're so small....... Signed Norm Macdonald.

I love Norm Macdonald! The way he tells a one liner then sits there and grins waiting for the applause...
