More bear stuff
« on: July 03, 2019, 06:49:14 am »

Another bear incident at my house.
The bear returned about 7 am.
I heard the dogs barking and I went outside to see what was going on.

The bear was running and one dog was running after it and gaining on it fast.
The dog caught the bear and bit it on the butt.
The bear ran another 100 ft, stopped and looked back.
I yelled the the bear to make it leave.
It looked at me and did not seem too concerned and then walked off.
It's not a very big bear.
Maybe a yearling.
But it is bigger than the dog that bit it on the ass :)

I was in Alberta Canada last week  (Banff to Jasper area).  One of the places I was at, a park guy said there were 300 black bears and 100 grizzlies in that area of the park.  (this was the Canadian Rockies)

Prior to the trip, I read that there have been years where there have been 12-20 reported bear maulings in this "tourist" area.
At one point in 2014, it was illegal to hike in groups of less then 4 and without bear spray in one of the areas.

When we were there last week,  there were a handful areas closed because of bear problems and elk attacks (calving this time of year). So, it's a real concern.  The park guy thought the black bears were more problematic then the grizzlies.  Perhaps the shear number was what he was referring to?

Doug, I would have been terrified that the bear would turn on my dog. I'm glad that didn't happen to you.

EDIT: Your dog looks pretty fast, but that's offset by the known fact that it chases bears!

DOG IS DOG!

My wife, from the Philippines has a saying: "Dog is Dog". When she first got here we went straight from the Portland International Airport, at night, 35 miles outside of Portland and lived in a cabin, off grid. She later told me she was bewildered cause she'd always heard they had these nice big cites in America, but since she didn't get into town until after the first month here, all she saw was the PNW foot hills of the Cascades.

I was at work and a black bear came around getting into the trash. As I recall, first she tried yelling at it from the window. When that didn't work, she let out my Chihuahua, which took off after the bear and chased it away. From my experiences where we now live, I've concluded black bears don't stick around when a dog starts barking due to the fact, it won't be long and another dog or 4 will show up to join the chase.

The above rule is not hard fast as I've mentioned before walking extremely close to a bear that just wasn't going to leave- at first anyway.

I was looking for a campground in NC, the trail head for Mt Mitchell, I seen like 12 guys all drinking beer at 7AM in a gravel pull-out, stopped n asked , got direction, then since I'm a northerner I had to ask,... "oh Son, we're bear hunt'n", they seen the confusion, laughed n said "we let the dogs out about 1/2hr ago, should hear 'em in a few minutes when it's tree'd, then one of us goes n shoots it"  :think1:

I'm learning from this thread that they don't eat dogs. Still don't know why, but if I see a bear I plan to act stupid and bark annoyingly. Probbly be safest that way.

Seems the Bears are active when the campgrounds fill up.  I understand, you are just strolling around and you get, well, hungry as a Bear.  You see these nice folks with their dogs, so you stop to ask "what's for dinner" except you get on the butt.

Actually, due to game laws, firearms are a troublesome alternative.  Except as follows, it's illegal to shoot bears; or even to shoot in their vicinity (warning shots) which is illegal harassment of wildlife, unless: i) you have a valid hunting license/permit during bear hunting season; or ii) you are under actual attack.  In the latter case being scared is not enough.  You need to be able to prove an actual attack.  Scars would be good evidence.  Otherwise you may be found to have committed a serious offense which can result in a criminal conviction; fine; imprisonment; permanent confiscation of your firearm and possibly automobile; loss of hunting privileges, etc.

which, from my rudimentary understanding of law, if I feel threatened with severe bodily harm, I CAN fire.  It's all mute anyway, Doug lives in a world like mine, if the friggen bear won't leave, pretty sure 90% of my neighbors, self included, would fire off a warning, and nobody in a 3mile radius would take notice, talk about it at the bear, bait, n gas, yup  :icon_biggrin:

I gave worst case legal scenarios above, of which it's good to be aware.  YMMV.

Note that State laws vary a lot.  In my state of NY, if you feel threatened, you have a duty to flee if you can do so safely; you must even flee your own home.  Some states have the Castle Doctrine: you can legally use deadly force against an intruder in your home; i.e., no requirement to flee your home.  Some states have the Stand Your Ground Doctrine: no need to flee anywhere.  None of this applies to wildlife.

When my daughter was playing basketball in Alaska, her coach would have them run trails and climb hills (mountains according to my daughter...) in the woods to break up the monotony. Coach carried a S&W .500 magnum on her hip.  She used it once to scare off a momma grizz and some cubs.  I've seen a few "Alaska Adventure"-type shows on cable where they fired off warning shots so maybe not as stringent in the great white north?

JJ,

Wildlife laws are crazy strict.  In my state possession of an eagle or hawk feather will send you to jail unless you are a licensed falconer or of American Indian heritage (and can prove your need for it).  So that cool Harry Potter quill pen you made for your daughter out of that big feather she found might have some serious bad magic attached to it...  Can't even pick them up.  Which is a shame as eagle and hawk rescue centers and falconers can use these feathers to repair damaged and broken feathers - yet another use for super glue.

The video is re-re-re-posted from a guy in India. Where he got it, I have no idea. Could be Michigan or Maine or upper California or Germany or who-knows?

Yes, I would hope the bear is some sort of "pet". Else the dog and the person with the camera should not be this close. I think the bear is "playing like a dog" (I'm sure you recognize the pouncing), but this dog doesn't feel like playing.

Over on the island, where bears are rare, a young bear tore up a trash fence, then saw a game-camera, and chewed on it a while. Great images of the inside of a bear's mouth.

Also in May, an adult black bear killed eight goats and destroyed three beehives at homes near the Chesterville Wildlife Management Area in Franklin County, Maine.

I'll join those raving about the Canadian Rockies and also Glacier NP in the US. My wife and I went there two years ago in June. Spent time hiking in Jasper and Yoho in Canada and then came down to Glacier and stayed in Many Glacier Lodge in GNP for an additional week of hiking. It was amazing! And staying at Many Glacier Lodge was a treat after years of camping. Rooms are spartan but the central lounge and deck are the places to hang. People were being kind of stupid with the Grizzlies, but often when they thought they saw a Griz, it was really a Black Bear that had brown fur - pretty common I guess.

We used to go walleye fishing every year at Lac Seul in western Ontario. Usually, one night during the week we would drive to the Ear Falls dump, because you were guaranteed to find bears there. I was amazed at the people that would get out of their cars to take pictures of the bears, sometimes from 8-10 feet away. The lodge owner said he occasionally had to deal with a bear if they persisted in visiting the camp. He said the bears could pop the siding off the cabins with their claws and get inside looking for food. He would never show us where he dumped the fish gut buckets...

Big bear at my house this morning
Dogs were outside barking like crazy

I went out to see what was going on

Big bear about 100 feet away just staring us down
He was probably at least 300 pounds and not afraid of me of my dogs
