capacitor question
« on: August 04, 2019, 07:57:33 am »
I am in the process of building an AB763 amp and am considering using Orange Drop caps. Do you guys worry about how the cap is oriented in the circuit. ie. which end is connected where..( +/-). Also using carbon comp. resistors...Am I asking for a noise problem?

I orient my caps so you can read the values quickly and easily. The writing is all pointing in the same direction. Kinda like a squad of soldiers standing at attention waiting for inspection. The CO can walk down the line and identify every soldier without having to walk behind the line to read some name tags. My resistors are also lined up so you can read the color bands left to right or top to bottom. I don't mix them up. If you search this forum you will find plenty of discussion about identifying the outside foil of caps and how to "properly" orient the caps.

CC resistors are noisy. MF are quiet.

FWIW my TDR (AB763) is built using orange drops and CCs.  :icon_biggrin:
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks Steve...re. the TDR, is it quiet...I ask these question because the last few amps I have built I have use 1 watt carbon film resistors and Mallory 150 caps and not worried about orientation. Not sure I should change what I am use to. By the way, I let a guitar playing friend take the Plexi 6V6 home to try, now I can't get it back...Heck of an amp.

TDR is quiet. It's been really quiet for a couple years now. Hasn't been plugged in.  :icon_biggrin:

CF and M150s is a good combo. But they don't fit my layout style very well, especially the CFs. Leads too big. I'm sure you know what happens to a M150 if you touch it with your soldering iron. Ouch!

I switched over to MF an Xicon chicklet caps a few years back, mostly because of the body and lead size. All my layouts are now optimized for these size components. Orange drops and CCs don't fit very well on my newer layouts. Keep that in mind if you ever build one of my boards.
