New Angled Front Cab for my Stereo Deluxe Reverb build
« on: August 08, 2019, 02:05:23 am »
After I finished my stereo deluxe reverb build I found it fit nicely in this old cab I had built a long time ago and was sitting unused.
It worked well and sounded good (a rectangular cab built of 1/2" baltic birch. At the end of a recent job I was told I could take a bunch of quality maple ply home. Mostly 1/4" 5 ply but some 1/2" stock as well (lower quality) and some odds and ends of solid maple milled pieces(various stuff that's good for bracing etc.

It sat around for a while until I had the use of a table saw and i proceeded to design and build a cabinet with an angled front, like the Gibson stereo amps but a much less extreme angle. just enough to hear the separation better(particularly at a distance) but not so much you can't hear the top end of the amp. Front mounted baffles for ease of maintenance etc. The old cab was 26" by 9.5" by 18.5" New cab is a little smaller at 25.5" by 8.5-10.5"  by 17.5' and weighs 2.5 lbs less so far
Here's what I came up with:
Clamping up the top and sides (top already has extra layers added to provide more strength (particularly for the handle, the amp mounting and depth for the amps controls.)

Amp cutout

bracing done

next to old cab

amp fit test (particularly with the deeper eminence speaker. PT is about 1/4" a
way from speaker frame.)

and some late night recording done while I had the amp mounted (using the line outs)

basically functionally done (still to do , finishing, proper speaker mounting (just attached from the back with a couple of screws for testing), tilt back legs mounting) grill cloth on baffles

95% done. The slightly angled premise works well to give the 'stereo' echo more space. The amp is slightly smaller and a couple lbs lighter. JBL speaker is now on the opposite side from the PT so the balance is better for carrying. Still to do fender style tilt back arms made of maple. (I usually use vintage organ maple bass pedals but I have some maple stock that will work really well). Baffles mount from the front and when removed allow excellent access to the inside of the amp. Finish is Varathanes 'pro' water based lacquer and it has a slight ambering quality to it which I miss in their standard uber clear diamond finish. Very glad there's an ambering water based finish. Don't look too closely at the hasty grill cloth job. Also vintage hifi or organ grill cloth. I think this amp and my vibrolux build will be candidates for S. Luckey and 2deafs new tremelo circuit.

Nicely done.

How much does it weigh?

So far about 52lbs. Maple tilt back arms will probably make it 53 lbs. It is two deluxes in one one amp a Twin reverb PT and JBL D123. I'm not sure I could've made it any lighter.
