Dinged output transformer
« on: August 21, 2019, 08:10:28 am »
Hi all.
Having a bad day today. Wood work issues, another noisy build, and generally losing faith. Decided to start a new build only to find when I unpacked the output transformer that the corner is dented.
Is this likely to be an issue? I don’t want to build the whole thing only to find I have problems. Never encountered this in a new transformer.
Cheers,
Reuben

If the laminates are dinged then a few may be shorted together.   They are each insulated by a layer of lacquer.  Post a pic.   Jim

Yes, the laminates are dinged. I wouldn’t be concerned (besides aesthetics) if it were just the bell covers.
I’ve been trying to post o pic off my iPhone, but it has the wrong file extension (jpeg not jpg), and I can’t find a way to change it on my phone.

It might not be trash--it will certainly work somewhat.  Check out this link on identifying unknown output transformers before you decide on buying another.  It may be close enough to satisfactory spec......

It is a brand new transformer, straight out of the box, and the project is for somebody who has requested this to be a display piece with exposed transformers etc. I will have to get another one for this project anyway, but I'm wondering whether it will be acceptable for use in a later project.  it is a Hammond 1760W transformer, for Fender Twin and Bassman 100 style circuits.

That will work fine. (It is not much dinged and the ding is in the corner where flux is low.) Use it.

Yes, if this is supposed to be a ShowPiece with exposed parts, you'll get another transformer and use this one where it won't offend any eyeballs.
